Overview

The department serves a town of sixteen thousand and the surrounding metro area with a sheriff, one deputy, a patrolman and a secretary, and keeps its records on paper in a broom-closet archive. It is short on funds ("take it up with the taxpayers"), and the sheriff admits to "a little bit of a meth problem" (Radford Horror 02). Part-time volunteer deputies are called in for the search for Phoebe Augustine and for guard duty (Radford Horror 05). The department is cooperative and small-town, though the sheriff wants to run things "by the book" and is wary of the FBI at first (Radford Horror 01).

History

The Radford Horror

  • The team first phones the station from the Pay n' Stay; Deputy Underhill fetches the sheriff, who takes the call as "Sheriff Roosevelt." After he sets his ground rules, Molly confirms the team is legitimate (Radford Horror 01).
  • At the station the team reads the Radio Shack robbery file and finds the thick missing-dog folder in the paper archive; the sheriff's notes in it say "perverts," underlined (Radford Horror 02).
  • Molly's 4:30 a.m. call about Phoebe Augustine's disappearance sets off the search of the woods (Radford Horror 04).
  • The station's small morgue is the autopsy site. The department issues an APB on Abelforth Whateley and on the unmarked white van, and the sheriff imposes a curfew (Radford Horror 05).
  • The sheriff tells Andrew about a school truancy complaint against Dean Lawson and lends the team a squad car (Radford Horror 06).
  • The department dismantles the Whateley house top to bottom for forensic examination, and Molly promises to call the hospitals and send people on foot after the team reports trouble at the church (Radford Horror 07).
  • After the church fight the sheriff presents the official theory that Wilbur is a serial killer tied to "the cartel," reports that Dr. Lori and Derek Augustine confessed to inappropriate relationships with Amanda Lucky, and closes the kidnapping case (Radford Horror 08). See the cartel.

The Radford Horrors

  • Underhill is now sheriff after a "battlefield promotion": the old sheriff had a heart attack earlier in the year. She recaps the first case, supplies the missing-agents map, the lawyers' number and missing posters, and asks the team to look into the Safe Environment Fund (Radford Horrors 02).
  • She brings coffee, offers the team the unused mother-in-law suite in the back, and presents the Elizabeth George case, driving the team to the Douglas Pinball Emporium (Radford Horrors 03).
  • She identifies the homeless man as Billy Thornton, and says she has seen gray vans around town and assumed they were construction (Radford Horrors 04).

Trivia

  • The sheriff is called "Frank" and "Sheriff Roosevelt" in the first episode but is often just "the sheriff" afterward (Radford Horror 01).
