Description

Mirabeth picks the library from the video phone's satellite map as a place where Derk can draw while she travels. The children's room is downstairs. Butcher paper is unrolled over the floor, and a table holds ham-and-cheese sandwiches, a few PB&Js and a pile of juice boxes. A large wishing-well fountain with coins in the bottom stands outside. History of events there

Derk lands outside the library after his jump from the Athletes' Village, cracking the paving stones, and washes in the fountain. A librarian asks him to use his "inside voice," so he answers with his hand over his mouth, and the staff sit him down in the children's room next to a group of toddlers. He eats just under half the snack table and, according to the staff, apparently mistakes a snow globe for a juice box. Over the next hour and a half he draws scorpions, the stars seen from space and a dog on the floor paper, a Superior roll of 6. (Philosopher's Fist)

The staff, who found him unsupervised and unable to explain himself, call child services and Animal Control. When Mirabeth arrives about an hour later, the front desk is empty, the toddlers are crying in a corner and every member of the staff is staring at Derk. She sends Derk off along the emergency exit signs at speed and tears the cape-sized paper off the floor, which becomes Derk's Flag. She walks past Animal Control and out the front door while police sirens approach. Later a detective asks her about the incident and says the Animal Control call ended in a riot, adding that the agency was sick of prank calls. What happened in the riot is never explained.
