Game System

Non-canon

This game system belongs to the non-canon one-shot Philosopher's Fist 3.J/2: Unchainable, not to the main campaign.

The Game System of Philosopher's Fist 3.J/2: Unchainable is a Powered by the Apocalypse game whose stats, conditions and playbooks follow the superhero game Masks, in contrast to the Monster of the Week rules of the main campaign (see Game mechanics).

Type Lore (rules)
Aliases Powered by the Apocalypse; Masks-style
GM Andre
First appearance Philosopher's Fist

Overview

Andre says the game is Powered by the Apocalypse "but it's a little bit different," calls its rules document "really wordy," and looks up rules live during play. He and Rita check the text together for moves such as Defend Someone. Dante keeps his character sheet in a drawing program, so he is unsure how harm is tracked and writes down one harm for now. (Philosopher's Fist)

Stats

Danger, Freak, Savior, Superior and Mundane. Andre describes Mundane as "human interpersonal charisma." (Philosopher's Fist)

Conditions

Afraid, Angry, Guilty, Insecure and Hopeless. Mirabeth marks Insecure after failing to slap Mr. Cartwright. (Philosopher's Fist)

Moves

Assess the Situation, Defend Someone, Directly Engage a Threat, Provoke Someone, Pierce the Mask and Unleash Your Powers.

Playbooks

The Bull (Derk, played by Dante). Dante introduces the ability with "as the Bull... as defender, roll Danger instead of Savior." Derk rolls Danger in place of Savior when defending, and Danger in place of Freak for Unleash Your Powers, which Dante calls "physics." He also has a base -1 to Superior.

The Legacy (Mirabeth, played by Rita). Rita refers to one of her moves as "a Legacy one." Mirabeth's abilities include godlike beauty, legendary speed, Symbol of Authority (give an NPC an order based on an authority they recognize; on a hit they choose to do what she says, get out of her way, attack at disadvantage or freeze) and Divine Armor (force-field bubbles of limited range). Her Danger is -1.

Notable rolls

  • Derk's Defend on Ovain's blast: 5 + 2 = 7, a minimum success. He escalates, and the blast backscatters into Ovain's eyes.
  • Derk's wall jump: Danger 8, costing 1 harm (a twisted ankle). Mirabeth rolls Danger to hold on: 12 with her -1, so 11.
  • Derk's re-entry over the capital: Superior 11, capped at 10.
  • Derk's flag drawing: Superior 6.
  • The Ovain fight: Danger 12 (tail slam), 15 (bear hug), 12 (groin punch) and 10 (springboard); Mundane 6 (a miss); Unleash Your Powers 7 (the jump into space).
  • Mirabeth's Pierce the Mask: a miss on the friend call (3) and a 12 on the monk.
  • Mirabeth's Symbol of Authority: Savior 8, freezing the guards at the rope.
