Claymore Mine

The Claymore mine is a directional anti-personnel mine carried by Kurt Larson. He uses it to kill an ape-man and drive off the rest during the ambush on the Special Projects level beneath the Spud Hut plant.

Type Item (explosive)
Aliases Claymore; "Claymores for Bigfoot"
Holder Kurt Larson (played by Dante)
Status Used; Kurt has room for only one
First appearance Appalachia 03 (mentioned); used in Appalachia 08

Description

Kurt carries the mine on his back belt "like a fanny pack", where it takes up his single equipment slot. Rita points out that he had also wandered around with Claymores "in the last mystery". (Appalachia 08) In Appalachia 03, Kurt already jokes, "I really hate being on American soil. This is dumb. We just Claymore all the ends we couldn't clear."

Properties

  • Directional blast that kills or vaporizes creatures in front of it, with a pressure wave and fragments that can reach allies nearby.
  • Loud enough to deafen the whole team. Kurt warns them by shouting "Ear pro!" and covering his own ears.
  • Andre allowed Dante a preparedness roll to have it on hand. Dante rolled a 7, which his Sharp stat raised to a 10. (Appalachia 08)

History

The Special Projects ambush

Five ape-men attack the team. One juggles Andrew Howard while another punches Kurt's dog whistle into his throat. Once Kurt dislodges it, four of the creatures are closing on him. He produces the mine, shoves it down in front of him, jumps backward and yells "Ear pro!". The other PCs resolve their reactions first: Huell Kendrick, stunned, fails automatically; Andrew is thrown back up to the ceiling and so is above the blast; and Dick "The Biz" Baxter drops and covers his ears on military reflex. (Appalachia 08)

The mine detonates. The creature juggling Andrew becomes a mist of gore and bone fragments, and Andrew drops into the remains and bumps his head on the concrete. Huell is hit by ricocheting fragments and a pressure wave, ruptures an eardrum, and is left semi-conscious at three harm. The Biz takes one harm. Everyone is temporarily deafened, and the door frame and the wall opposite it are destroyed. Sheriff Carter Burke, who dived through the "break room" door when he saw the mine, peeks back out afterward. The surviving creatures flee into other parts of the floor. (Appalachia 08)

Aftermath

At the start of Appalachia 09, Andre remarks that the "break room" Jan Martense sent the party to "was never a break room. It was just a door", and that the shrapnel from the Claymore has blown the door away completely. Later, when about ten ape-men block the only exit, Zack asks whether Kurt brought a second Claymore. Andre rules that a second mine cannot fit in his equipment slot. (Appalachia 09)

Trivia

  • The tally of dead creatures varies. At the end of Appalachia 08, Andre says one is dead and at least two badly injured, though Dante counts two dead after adding a creature Zack had shot earlier. Andre's recap at the start of Appalachia 09 says the Claymore "evaporated two of the Yetis".
  • Dante argued that a Claymore and gunshots could not go unheard even four stories down, which raised the team's worry about the news crew upstairs. (Appalachia 08)
  • Kurt's line "Claymores for Bigfoot" comes in the next episode, when Dante compares them to garlic for Dracula. (Appalachia 09)
