Hidden Attic Lair¶
The Hidden Attic Lair is a secret den above the Roulet house, reached through the chimneys, where the Roulet Intruder lived for at least a year.
| Type | Location (hidden room) |
| Aliases | The hideout; chimney attic |
| Region | Inside the Roulet House, Exeter, Rhode Island |
| First appearance | Roulet Estate 02 |
Description¶
The lair is reached by a gap of about five by six removed bricks in the side of a chimney. Climbing notches are cut inside the flue, and each chimney's weather flap on top traps smoke but can lift to serve as an exit. Every chimney in the house has been modified this way, invisible from outside. See Chimney Passages. Only Kurt and Andrew fit; Huell and the Biz cannot. (Roulet Estate 02)
Inside the attic are:
- a cot, garbage bags, a card table with cards and MRE containers, and cigarettes;
- looted guns, including a Kalashnikov and Russian WWII-era pistols, many loaded, plus money and valuables;
- Polaroids of sleeping people on the walls, including the owners and older photos of other people;
- a cooler with beta blockers in a prescription tube with the label scraped off, and a homemade jar of green slurry with an eyedropper;
- a blood-crusted butterfly knife in an ornate case beside a boarded attic vent;
- a briefcase of money that looks as though it was abandoned partway through packing. (Roulet Estate 02)
History of events there¶
The cold open of Roulet Estate 02 shows a nude man with an oddly shaped head loading shotgun shells one by one in a dark, dusty space with thin light trickling in, evidently this attic. Kurt lights a fire in a fireplace; it spews smoke, and with a mirror and flashlight he sees a gap in the chimney side and climbing notches. He and Andrew climb up. Kurt rolls a 12 on Investigate a Mystery and learns that someone has probably lived there for at least a year, unknown to the owners, entering every major room by chimney; the agents recall that locks had been installed on the inside of the bedroom doors. The photos give Andrew a strong serial-killer impression. Kurt sniffs the slurry, hallucinates, and hands his sidearm to Andrew. (Roulet Estate 02)
The agents photograph everything, bag the guns, money, valuables and slurry and lower them down the chimney to deny the intruder resources. On the way down Andrew hallucinates that the bricks around him are turning into rolling muscle and swallowing him, and he drops three feet onto Kurt. (Roulet Estate 02)
In Roulet Estate 03, the beta blockers resurface when the pharmacy gunman begins to collapse, and Kurt links them to the lair. See The Roulet Intruder. (Roulet Estate 03)
