Smith Hotel¶
The Smith Hotel is the stately converted plantation-style hotel in Dahlonega, Georgia, where the team took rooms 109 and 110 beside the mysterious room 111 during The Things in Appalachia.

Description¶
A two-story, plantation-style converted house with Indian blankets, cable TV, mini fridges and an ice machine. It has a ballroom with a cheese spread, a stable, and a historic exhibit with a preserved mining camp and a shaft to an old mine. A continental breakfast serves scrambled eggs, local sausages (said to be goat), apple fritters, "the wonderful rainbow of pork products" and the slightly fermented Auraria peach preserves. Andre noted that the doors use conventional locks, as keycards were not yet common (Appalachia 01, Appalachia 02, Appalachia 06).
The team chose it over the de-branded Motel and Suites. Rooms cost $55 per person per room. A conference of dental oncologists filled the hotel, and the team got the last two rooms, 109 and 110; the party's suspicion of the dentists became a running gag (Appalachia 01).
Notable places within¶
- Rooms 109 and 110. The team's rooms; Andrew shared with Huell and Kurt with the Biz. Kurt swept his room for bugs and cameras and found none.
- Room 111. The next-door room that the Biz secretly bugged.
- Front desk. Staffed by a chatty young clerk on the day shift and a night clerk; in Appalachia 07 by the 17-year-old Tully. See Smith Hotel Desk Clerk.
- Lobby phone and parking lot. Andrew used the lobby phone to call Big Bill, and a payphone outside serves the lot.
- Mini fridge. Used to store evidence: the folded face and HF lighter in Appalachia 03, and the rabbit pelt in Appalachia 02.
- Bathroom. The Biz spent several hours developing the film photos here in Appalachia 06.
History of events there¶
- Arrival. The clerk described Auraria, the hunters and the Covenant, and advised against staying in Auraria after dark. Off the record he thought the missing boy had run away and the woman had left her cult (Appalachia 01).
- The dentists. At breakfast Huell spotted a dental oncologist digging through the scrambled eggs with bare hands (Appalachia 01).
- The room 111 plant. The Biz planted a camera and microphone in room 111 (Appalachia 02).
- Andrew's sleepwalk. Andrew woke in the woods, far from town, with a bloody lighter, took a cab home and was let in by the hotel clerk. Huell slept through it (Appalachia 03). See HF Lighter.
- The lot. Dr. McManley's RV pulled into the lot; a fender bender between a van-life camper and a shiny black Ford truck occurred there, with a fed-looking man in a suit and a woman in a forest-ranger uniform swapping insurance details (Appalachia 04). See McManley's RV.
- The night vision headset. In the cold open of Appalachia 06, state police searched the bushes outside the hotel and found a night vision headset (see Night-vision Goggles). The door of the room next to the team's had been broken down, and the Biz had a badly twisted ankle after an offscreen night (Appalachia 06).
- Appalachia 07. The team stopped at the hotel to change socks, and Andrew's call to Big Bill was overheard by Tully (Appalachia 07).
Inhabitants¶
The desk clerks, the dental oncologists, and the next-door guests. McManley kept his RV parked at the hotel.
