Description

A handheld wand about the size of a billy club, but flat and rectangular with rounded corners. It has a single LED on the back that lights up and an external battery pack. A trigger activates it. (Philosopher's Fist)

Properties

It detects both concealed weapons and metal and superhuman abilities, and the one LED serves for all of them. Neither Derk nor Mirabeth knows how it tells them apart. (Philosopher's Fist)

History

At security the older, chubby, profusely sweating guard waves the wand over Derk and it goes off. Derk says, "Mama says there's a metal plate in my head from when I went down," reasoning that with only one LED the alarm can be blamed on metal. The wand goes off again, and Mirabeth helps with her godlike beauty (Savior 7) while Derk rolls a 6. The guard taps Derk's head, which makes a "tink, tank" sound, and Derk adds, "Rocks are good for your bones." The guard lets them through, saying that next time they need a waiver, and Mirabeth fakes an intimate moment with him. He tells her, "It's my job, man," and moves down the line without scanning her. (Philosopher's Fist)

Inside the hall, she finds him by the snack table and sweet-talks him into showing her the wand, then walks off with it. A roll of Mundane persuades him to let her borrow it, and he is left standing there looking nervous. She uses it to convince the guards at the roped-off floor that Derk is there to protect the president. Afterward Colonel Sparago accuses her of using "sexual wiles" on a man who has been struggling in life. (Philosopher's Fist)
