Description

The ER is described as small and quiet, a place of drug seekers and one man who shot his own foot (Radford Horror 04). It has a waiting room, a side room that can be crammed with extra beds, and a hallway pay phone (Radford Horrors 03). It is not equipped for everything: in 1993 it has no way to run a DFA test for rabies, so samples and patients go to Roanoke, which also supplies the HDCV vaccine (Radford Horrors 03).

The staff are never named. The recurring ER doctor is a tired, exasperated man who comes to know the team on sight. On the first visit, a nurse tells the burned Kurt to sit down while she fetches the doctor (Radford Horror 04).

History of events there

The Radford Horror

  • Radford Horror 03. The episode ends with the team pulling into the ER parking lot with a seriously burned Kurt in the back seat, after the encounter with Agent Murphy (Radford Horror 03).
  • Radford Horror 04. About 11 p.m., Kurt is wheeled back and debrided, cleaned and bandaged, taking him back to 0 harm and running up roughly $8,000 in bills. Andrew Howard, who healed Kurt for the first time ever, arrives with a nosebleed and a "spiritual high," and a doctor brings him gauze and an ice pack and mentions that Kurt also needs a dentist. In the waiting room the Biz briefs Andrew and Huell on the hit-and-run and the flashlight weapon (Radford Horror 04).
  • Bedbugs. After a night at the Pay n' Stay, Huell's bedbug bites become obvious and he gets hydrocortisone at the hospital; his clothes are steam-sterilized and he wears scrubs, then borrowed clothes (Radford Horror 05).
  • Radford Horror 06. Later the same day, Huell comes back with a broken right arm (ulna) after the Whateley house fight. The same doctor from the bedbug visit treats him: "Twice in a day, you are not having a good life, my friend." Huell is healed to full, though his right arm stays cumbersome (-1 to shooting and arm-strength rolls). The doctor jokes about frequent flyer miles and radiation allergies (Radford Horror 06).
  • Radford Horror 08. After the burning church, the team wakes in the Radford County ER, four beds shoved into a side room. Diane has driven out; Andrew needed about three people's worth of blood. The doctor lectures them that he has seen them four times in three days and agrees with Huell's remark that the Pay n' Stay is a poor life choice, reports that the Biz had severe burns, three to four pounds of thigh tissue missing and badly impacted bowels, and offers to say they are still unconscious if they need time before the sheriff and deputy question them. Andre estimates a stay of about a week, during which the doctor brings the Biz kale salad, and the team plans a cover story, gets medical records, watches baseball and calls home (Radford Horror 08).

The Radford Horrors

  • Radford Horrors 02. After the motel attack by the rabid mouse, the team goes to the ER at the end of the session. The doctor greets them with "Not again. Not you guys." and orders rabies shots for everyone: a series of four stomach injections over two weeks, at $3,000 a head. Dante's Kurt complains that it is "not coming out of my coke budget" (Radford Horrors 02).
  • Radford Horrors 03. Andrew wakes from a dream of his "dad" (see Andrew's alien dad) in the ER. The team shares one patient room. The doctor takes the rat, still on Kurt's harpoon in a plastic bag, for testing in Roanoke; rabies immunoglobulin starts at once, by IV for most of the team and by about 20 shots around Webster's swollen nipple. Webster is paged to the hallway pay phone, where FBI Director Rudy Giuliani asks about the fence incident (see Bivens lawsuit). Andrew reacts badly to the treatment and worries he is a "rabies construct" (Radford Horrors 03).

Trivia

  • The doctor's "four times in three days" scolding is one of the campaign's recurring hospital gags (Radford Horror 08).
  • Andre's audio briefly cut out during the hospital scene in Radford Horrors 03; this was a recording glitch, not part of the story (Radford Horrors 03).
