Minor monsters and entities: The Summer Service¶
These are the minor creatures, legends and unexplained presences of the Marblehead case. The main threats have their own pages: the angel thing, the worms, worm bags and Puddles.
Beast from the sea¶
Also called the suspected sea monster. In Summer Service 01 Andrew, speed-reads a Bible with a doomsday tone around its Revelation passages and announces that he thinks the townspeople might sacrifice people to a sea monster. Later, on a call with a contact at the Bureau, he says he thinks the explosion was a sea monster and that the town is probably feeding it, or trying not to feed it, something. Amos Shaw's sermon on Revelation 13, with its seven-headed beast rising out of the sea, seems to support the idea. See also Amos Shaw and the Marblehead sea monster legend. (Summer Service 01)
Cold-open sea target¶
Also described as the thing "with a human with it." In the cold open of Radford Horror 08, four men in a steel boat at night aim a hydraulic gun at a target that the gunner reports "has a human with it." Mr. Miller fires, everything explodes at once, and the scene cuts to credits. The target is never identified, and the episode does not say where the boat is. See Boat crew. (Radford Horror 08)
Marblehead sea monster legend¶
Also called the tentacled worm. In the case file delivered at the end of Radford Horror 08, Marblehead is described as famous for its sea monsters, with a local Loch Ness analogue: a big tentacled worm said to grab people and drag them under the water. Ezra jokes that it is a "worm with bonus worms." The legend predates the worm infection the team later finds, and the episodes do not say whether the two are connected. See also The worms and Marblehead. (Radford Horror 08)
Thing in Shaw's house¶
Whatever tore through Amos Shaw's house. The upstairs bathroom door has been forced outward from inside, with its hinges partly pulled from the wall, the bathroom is wrecked and the window smashed, and a long broken stretch of the hallway wall looks as if something was shoved through it and dragged along, with blood on it. McManley documents about a full body's worth of blood loss, concludes the victim is dead, and says the blood was lost in the bathroom, so "there may have been a second party present" to knock the door down. The cause is never explained. (Summer Service 03)
Thing in the sea cave¶
Something big that moves inside a cave open to the ocean in the cold open of Summer Service 01. Andre describes a long, slow zoom into the cave mouth, with water flowing in and out, and just before the darkness swallows the image something large inside moves a little, then cuts to credits. It is never identified. (Summer Service 01)
Whispering voice¶
Also called the alien dad's ghost. In the middle of the night before the hotel siege, a voice whispers "Wake up and get your gun" in Andrew's ear, brushing his ear with lips. Waking, he meets the gaze of the fish ornament on his nightstand. He tells the Biz, "I think the ghost of my alien dad is telling me something's going on." The voice's source is never confirmed,. (Summer Service 05)
Worm-hollowed fish¶
Also called the mash-up fish. The EPA researchers' field journal describes fish that are not known species, some of them distorted versions of known fish and some like taxidermy mash-ups with a piece of one attached to another. It also describes normal-looking fish packed with worms that have replaced their vital organs, yet which, unlike the other fish, are not dead. See EPA field journal. (Summer Service 03)
