Room 111¶
Room 111 is the Smith Hotel room next to the team's, staged with wine and chocolates, where the Biz secretly planted a spy camera and microphone on instructions from a coded message.
| Type | Location |
| Region | Smith Hotel, Dahlonega, Georgia |
| First appearance | Appalachia 01 |
Description¶
The room has a bed made up, a TV with a VCR underneath, a bedside drawer holding a Gideon Bible, a big box of condoms and lubricant, and a ventilation duct over the bed. A delivered basket holding two big bottles of wine and a box of chocolates was waiting on the table (Appalachia 02).
History of events there¶
The assignment. In Appalachia 01 the Biz called a sweepstakes line that he had recognized as a KGB front. The coded message sent him to the Smith Hotel in Dahlonega, Georgia, to install a hidden camera in room 111 before midnight, retrieve it 24 hours later and mail the undeveloped film to an address to be supplied the following day. He did not tell the rest of the team. See Spy Camera and Microphone and KGB. The team's own rooms (109 and 110) were next door.
The plant. In Appalachia 02 the hotel's front-desk clerk reported room 111 to the Biz as suspicious. It was booked under one name and paid for with a card in another name, and the man who booked it, armed, rude, short-haired, military-looking and Midwestern-sounding, offered the clerk $100 to keep quiet. The clerk lent the Biz the master key. Inside, the Biz tucked the motion-sensing film camera in among the cables beside the VCR, facing the bed, and stuck the microphone to the underside of the bedside drawer. He rolled a 10 on Act Under Pressure to leave no fingerprints. He concluded it was a setup, though not for him, and that it "might involve kids." (Appalachia 02)
The neighbors. In Appalachia 03, Andrew came back to the hotel, hurt, and a curly-haired blonde woman in a bathrobe outside the room next door asked, "Are you okay, honey?" A suited man with a military haircut steered her inside and glared at him. The clerk told the team that the room's guests had booked under a different name than the occupant's, that several scary-looking men were involved, and that one had offered him money. Later Huell glimpsed a laughing man in a big cowboy hat and dark sunglasses entering the room, looking oddly familiar for a split second (Appalachia 03). See Next-door Hotel Guests.
Unresolved¶
The episodes never say who the room 111 party was targeting, and the retrieval of the camera and the mailing of the film are never shown. Separately, a scandal over FBI agents allegedly spying on Bill Clinton broke while the team was in town; it is never established whether it is connected to this room. See Clinton Surveillance Scandal.
