The nuclear power plant¶
The nuclear power plant is a fortified coastal reactor facility near Marblehead, Massachusetts, and the target of the infected convoy in the climax of The Summer Service.
| Type | Location |
| Region | Marblehead area, Massachusetts, on the coast |
| Status | Fence knocked down and machine guns silenced by the nuclear blast; infected people were inside and fighting continued (as of Summer Service 06) |
| First appearance | Summer Service 06 |
Description¶
The plant lies beyond a flooded freeway and a stretch of marshland, ringed by a perimeter fence. When Kurt worries about firing a nuclear device near it, the radio contact replies, "Oh, those things are way overbuilt. It'll be fine. They're designed for you to fly a 747 into 'em." Kurt doubts his claim to have "done this before" (Summer Service 06).
The episodes never name the plant or the real-world facility it might be modeled on.
Defenses¶
Just beyond the fence the ground drops about six inches when something heavy crosses it, which popped dozens of tires on the convoy's vehicles. Machine-gun turrets then cut the convoy down from behind the rain and fog. A handful of howling infected ran through the gunfire and got inside, and one gun jammed with a horrible mechanical sound (Summer Service 06).
History of events there¶
- The plan. After the glowing angel thing turned back toward the sea, the radio contact and Kurt agreed the creature was heading for the plant, where the convoy of worm-infected townspeople was going. The idea was to let the convoy engage plant security, which would force the creature out of the water to help them, and then to take a shot at it from a vantage point (Summer Service 06).
- The convoy attack. The team followed the convoy along the freeway, then watched it leave the road for the last quarter mile through marsh. From about a mile away they saw the convoy ram the fence, lose its tires to the sunken ground and get shredded by the machine guns (Summer Service 06).
- The nuclear shot. As a light rose out of the ocean, Huell fired the Davy Crockett. The shockwave knocked the team flat, toppled the fence and silenced the guns, and trees in the distance burst into flame. The creature survived and came straight for the team (Summer Service 06).
- Aftermath. Gunfire could still be heard from the plant as the team left. At the Marblehead checkpoint a National Guard lieutenant told Andrew that the attack had failed but killed a few guards. The older officer in charge later remarked that someone had used a tactical nuke there, which would be very hard to keep out of the news. The team agreed to tell the authorities that terrorists were responsible (Terrorist cover story) (Summer Service 06).
Inhabitants¶
Plant security and the infected who breached it. It is never shown how many infected survived inside.
