Description¶
Sheriff Roosevelt describes Amanda as a cheerleader and "real kind of all-American girl" who had nevertheless landed in the cells a couple of times for intoxication, and who had been seen "running around with a couple of boys, not just her boyfriend": Dean Lawson, the biker Matt McCready and, back in middle school, the Whateley twins (Radford Horror 01). She vanished in her pajamas with no belongings (Radford Horror 02). Her parents, Liam Lucky and Sarah, are devout Catholics who wait by the phone. Both point the finger at McCready, and her father says she had been seeing a therapist, Dr. Lori, for her grades (Radford Horror 01).
History¶
The disappearance¶
The task force's case file says Amanda vanished from her locked third-story bedroom and that the only witness, an insomniac four-year-old named Tyler, saw a spaceman take her (Radford Horror 01). The file puts her disappearance two days earlier; the sheriff says three. The bedroom hangs over a carport with a long drop and no impact marks. The door was locked from inside. The agents found:
- a loosened drainpipe above the window;
- a hollow bedpost holding bottles of Xanax and Vicodin prescribed by Dr. Lori (see Amanda's prescriptions);
- a diary with its pages removed (see Amanda's diary);
- a bent metal smokestack on the roof, reachable by a trellis, with scratch marks.
They concluded she left voluntarily, upward onto the roof (Radford Horror 01).
The investigation¶
The pill stash led the team to Dr. Lori. He said he had treated her for about three years for anxiety and depressive tendencies, prescribed only Xanax, and denied writing Vicodin. Under pressure he said Amanda told him Dean Lawson was involved in drugs. The pharmacist, however, showed a Vicodin record under Lori's name from about a year earlier (Radford Horror 02). Kurt later found a pink butterfly hair tie in the Augustine barn, a clue pointing toward Phoebe Augustine (Radford Horror 03). The fingerprints on the roof matched the old spaceman robbery (Radford Horror 05).
The body¶
At the end of Radford Horror 04, Molly Underhill told the team that the body of a young girl, probably Amanda, had been found by the interstate. Much of the face was gone and some organs eaten, which the examiner put down to an animal after death (Radford Horror 04). Dr. Harvey Mauden, who had delivered her as a baby, performed the autopsy in the next episode:
- She had been crucified, but was not restrained when she died.
- She was dressed in a nightgown, so had no pockets, and was barefoot.
- Toxicology found a lot of opiates and traces of Xanax, enough to sedate someone who should not have been walking.
- A needle mark from the previous couple of days sat among older scars, suggesting a past drug habit.
- A pink butterfly hair tie was stuck in her blood-matted hair, like the one from the Augustine barn.
- She had been dead no more than a couple of hours.
(Radford Horror 05). The cold open of that episode was a flashback of her. At the scene, a diffuse ring of blood spatter about five feet across lay over her bare footprints, which led back into the woods; there was no sign of anyone pursuing her (Radford Horror 05). See Highway crime scene and Crucifixion MO.
In Radford Horror 06, the doctor reported that about five percent of her blood volume was an unidentified foreign substance, and that her blood showed markers of severe malnutrition even though her body did not (Radford Horror 06). In Radford Horror 07, Dante resolved to have Dean's heroin compared with what was in her system (Radford Horror 07).
Resolution¶
In Radford Horror 08, the sheriff told the team that Dr. Lori and Derek Augustine had both confessed to an inappropriate sexual relationship with Amanda. Each had learned the other was involved, and Derek then attacked Lori believing he was doing the same to his daughter. Dante's own theory was that Amanda was crucified, escaped thanks to her heroin tolerance, and was then killed by "the mob" to stop information spreading; the team did not settle whether the Radford Moth was responsible. Wilbur's journal contains the line "I don't think Amanda knows, but I feel like Phoebe might." (Radford Horror 08)
Relationships¶
- Dean Lawson: boyfriend. Phoebe did not get along with him and had fought with Amanda about him, according to Phoebe's mother (Radford Horror 05).
- Phoebe Augustine: friend.
- Abelforth and Wilbur Whateley: childhood friends who lived down the street. The sheriff said she had been "involved" with the twins when they were in middle school (Radford Horror 01).
- Matt McCready: friend. He told the team that Dean threatened to have him killed when he asked when Dean had last seen her, and that about a week earlier Amanda had seemed to want to tell him something at school (Radford Horror 06).
Trivia¶
- During Radford Horror 08, Dante pitched a joke cold open in which Amanda's corpse explodes and a thousand moths come out (Radford Horror 08).
- The episodes never establish who killed her.
