Lucky house

The Lucky house is the Radford, Virginia home of Liam Lucky and his family, and the first crime scene of The Radford Horror: the locked third-story pink bedroom from which Amanda Lucky vanished.

Type Location (private home, crime scene)
Aliases Lucky residence
Region Radford, Virginia
Inhabitants Liam Lucky and Sarah Lucky; formerly Amanda Lucky
First appearance Radford Horror 01

Description

The house is three stories tall. The third story extends about fifteen feet over a carport on two round wooden posts, with a two-story drop below and no impact marks. An ivy trellis runs up the back to the roof, where a bent metal smokestack stands. The doors have good locks. The décor is very Catholic, with shrines and an oak crucifixion carving, about six feet tall, in place of a TV (Radford Horror 01).

Amanda's bedroom is a pink "Lisa Frank" room with a four-poster bed (one bedpost hollow), a vanity and a bookshelf. Police tape is up (Radford Horror 01). It was locked from the inside, and prints show only Amanda and her family (Radford Horror 01).

Across a wide road and a deep yard, about 100 feet away, stands the trailer of the boy Tyler (Radford Horror 01). The Whateley house is less than a mile away (Radford Horror 01).

History of events there

The first crime scene

Sheriff Frank Roosevelt takes the team to the house after breakfast at the Lonely Mountain Diner. He describes Amanda as a 17-year-old cheerleader who was arrested for intoxication and is linked to Dean Lawson, Matt McCready and, in middle school, the Whateley twins (Radford Horror 01).

The team's investigation produces several findings (Radford Horror 01):

  • Huell Kendrick interviews Liam Lucky separately. Both parents are innocent and were asleep, and Amanda is an only child. Liam works on something classified at the Radford Arsenal.
  • Kurt Larson finds the drainpipe above the window knocked loose and the hollow bedpost hiding Xanax and Vicodin prescribed by Dr. Lori. See Amanda's prescriptions.
  • Andrew Howard finds Amanda's diary with its pages removed.
  • The team deduces that Amanda left voluntarily, upward to the roof. Kurt climbs the trellis and finds the bent smokestack with scratch marks consistent with a rope tied there.
  • The parents say Amanda saw a therapist for a year "for her grades," and blame Matt McCready, who lives with his father at a tourist ski lodge. They are surprised the diary was gutted, and report no missing money, toothbrush or suitcase.

Across the road Tyler describes a light and a spaceman all in white with a helmet, above the Lucky house, who "just went down." Roosevelt thinks he dreamed it, and Kurt proposes a man in a motorcycle suit and helmet (Radford Horror 01). See The Spaceman.

After Amanda's death

The highway crime scene where Amanda's body is found lies about a mile from the house. During the bushwhack through the woods in Radford Horror 05, the team finds a scrap of her dress and the remains of a dog about a quarter mile from the house. Kurt later searches Amanda's room again and finds one bedroom slipper by the window and the other across the room, suggesting that she went to the window, saw something and ran from it so fast that she left her slippers behind (Radford Horror 05).
