Irene Whateley

Irene Whateley is the mother of the Whateley boys in Radford, Virginia, a patient of Dr. Lawrence Lori who walked into the woods one evening after seeing something through her kitchen window, and whose body is later found in the old church.

Description

Irene never appears alive on screen. She is described by others: her husband Yobiah Whateley, a churchgoing man of about sixty; Dr. Lori, who calls her "a pretty strong one"; and the sheriff. Yobiah says she has had some depression since her son Wilbur's accident. Lori treated her for night terrors and insomnia, which he guesses were PTSD-related, starting a year and a half before her disappearance. She stopped coming six months before, unable to tolerate the tremors from the lithium and the side effects of the Prozac (Radford Horror 02).

Radford Horror 01

In his briefing, Sheriff Roosevelt mentions a second disappearance: a neighbor named Mrs. Whateley, who saw something out her kitchen window while making dinner, put down her pan, walked into the night and never came back. The team notes that the case looks different from Amanda Lucky's but that the two may be linked (Radford Horror 01).

Radford Horror 02

The team chooses the Whateley disappearance over a visit to Dr. Lori because it seems more pressing. At the Whateley house the sheriff shows them the kitchen, where a window by the mud door looks out on woods. Yobiah tells Kurt that Irene "saw something out the kitchen window" that he did not see, dropped the pan so that hot water went everywhere, ignored him and walked into the woods. He thought she was chasing off a coyote. Asked whether she seemed angry or scared, he says she "seemed surprised." Outside, the team finds two sets of footprints, one following the other deeper into the woods until the trail is lost in the ground cover. In the parents' bedroom the Biz finds nothing packed and no jewelry taken, so Irene expected to go to bed that night, along with leftover Prozac and lithium prescribed by Lori, meaning she had stopped taking them (Radford Horror 02).

When the team visits Lori, he tells them Irene came to him a year and a half earlier and that nothing in her history would explain wandering off (Radford Horror 02).

Radford Horror 08

After the fight at the burning church, the sheriff tells the team that Mrs. Whateley's remains were found in the back of the church, burned and disemboweled. Back at the church it is added that she was found crucified and, like Amanda, had organs missing. When the team returns to the church, a humanoid fat stain on the floor marks where she lay. The team agrees to let the police pin everything on Wilbur (Radford Horror 08). See Old-town church and Crucifixion MO.

  • In Radford Horror 01 the sheriff says her disappearance happened "this morning" and the search had gone on "since last night"; Radford Horror 02 makes it the previous evening.
  • Andre first said Irene started seeing Lori "about a year ago," then corrected it to a year and a half ago, stopping six months before.
  • Yobiah was first called "Josiah" and corrected to Yobiah.
