Description¶
Andre calls it a relatively nice city. The planet is one country, so this is the capital of the whole world. There are no cell phones, but there are video phones on practically every street corner, with a map application that shows satellite photography of the area. (Philosopher's Fist)
Getting there¶
After learning of the pre-event social, Derk jumps the distance in about fifteen minutes. Mirabeth speed-walks the shoulder of I-95 in pumps behind her parasol, going over any car in her way, and arrives in a couple of hours. Derk's re-entry roll is an 11, docked to 10, and he lands outside the library beside a wishing-well fountain, where he washes off the bugs. (Philosopher's Fist)
Notable places¶
- Public Library: the children's room where Derk draws his flag.
- Community center: ten blocks from the library, venue of the pre-event social for disadvantaged children (The Flag Contest).
- Motel 6: $86 for a joint suite, one of the relatively clean ones. The leads stay the night after a spot opens, and the TV news shows Ovain fighting the nation's military at the edge of the capital. Mirabeth, who sleeps with the TV on, comes across it on the way to "this universe's equivalent of Jeopardy!"
- Presidential Event Hall: site of the fight with Ovain.
History of events there¶
Across about two days the leads attend the social, sell an oil pyramid scheme, pass security at the event hall and fight Ovain. Afterward Mirabeth endures about eighteen hours of debriefing, and Colonel Sparago lists the damage, including a ruptured gas line and four financial-district blocks of West City evacuated.
