Dead grub-angel power core¶
The dead grub-angel power core is the corpse of a giant, glowing grub-like being, built into the portal machine in the cavern beneath the community center at the end of The Walkers in Skin.
| Type | Entity (dead) |
| Aliases | biblical angel; the dead angel |
| Status | Long dead; the portal machine is wrecked and the cavern ceiling comes down (Walkers 09) |
| First appearance | Walkers 09 |
Description¶
The portal machine in the cavern is roughly the size of half a dozen semi-trailer trucks and is built into the corpse of a creature. Andre reminds the players of "the thing that you fought in the seaside town," and describes it: probably a thousand-pound grub covered in odd mechanical or insectile limbs, with several revolving rings around it. That is how it looks when alive; this one has clearly been dead for a while, with cords and tubes running from it into the machine. Zack calls it "a biblical angel." It is the same kind of being as the angel thing fought off Marblehead in The Summer Service (Walkers 09).
Abilities¶
The dead body is wired into the machine, which creates a roughly 20-foot portal. Skinwalkers and tanks of blood with creatures floating in them are carried through it in what looks like an evacuation. On the far side is a burned, blasted landscape under a sky full of smoke, with a trail of emergency lights (Walkers 09).
History¶
The party descends the shaft and watches the evacuation from near the portal machinery. The players ask whether the portal opens onto the room where they last saw one in Georgia; Andre says it has similar qualities but does not exit there. When the cavern's power cuts out, the portal flickers and spasms, a diffuse scream in an unknown language sounds, and people rush through. Huell Kendrick throws a grenade unusually far into the middle of the support machinery, and the portal winks out, leaving 50 or 60 skinwalkers stranded on this side. Explosions in the dark then bring chunks of the ceiling down on the crowd (Walkers 09).
What remains unknown¶
The episodes never explain why a dead angel powers the machine, or who built it. The players compare the portal to the one in Georgia from The Things in Appalachia (the crack in the air).
