Description

A double-wide converted to offices, with the lights on and the shades drawn. Inside were dust on everything, fans running, a radio playing the news, and no cars outside. Nobody had been there for days to a week. The kitchenette was stripped, the bedrooms were stacked with file boxes, and there was a padlocked refrigerator (Walkers 06).

Notable places within

  • The sugar fridge. Huell Kendrick found a key ring in a desk and opened the fridge to find plastic bags of coarse white granules stacked floor to ceiling. Kurt tipped a sample into a vial, and Andrew photographed the bags. It was just sugar. See Sugar clues.
  • The mayor's desk. Piled with New York Post newspapers that stop abruptly about three months earlier, buried under hundreds of Tootsie Roll wrappers.
  • Deborah Wells's desk. The other heavily used desk, belonging to the city treasurer and school superintendent.

History of events there

The party tried the door after the answering machine said the office was out to lunch. Kurt's first lockpick snapped in the lock; a second cleared the broken tip and he shouldered the thin door open. While they searched, the mayor's Cadillac arrived. The party claimed the door was open and they had come for records on Yusuf. The mayor chewed lemon candies nervously, said the junkyard was outside the municipality, mentioned that a fire a few years earlier had destroyed the geological records, offered to call a friend at the county records office, took the ranch's number and locked up (Walkers 06).

Walkers 07 recalls the sugar fridge and the mayor's candies, and in Walkers 08 the team uses them to conclude he was replaced a couple of months earlier.

Trivia

  • Andre calls the building "the courthouse" throughout the visit and confirms to Zack, "Yes, this is the Ballard Courthouse", while the players call it City Hall. This conflicts with Walkers 03, where the courthouse across from the bar is a closed former church. The show never reconciles the two.
