Minor characters: The Roulet Estate¶
Minor characters of The Roulet Estate, in alphabetical order. The principal figures of the arc have their own pages: Margaret Roulet, Mr. Roulet, The Finnish Hare Krishna Monk, Officer Todd and Diane.
Andrew's Doctor¶
The physician who treats Andrew Howard after the task force is disbanded. In Roulet Estate 01 Andrew has not yet had a checkup since Utah and plans to visit his physician, who is "out in California," when he goes home. In the epilogue he spends a week at home with his doctor and church officials, who tell him his powers can be unpredictable in a crisis and promise tests. They X-ray him but never show him the films or any paperwork, and Andrew realizes for the first time that they do not know what they are talking about and that he is the "special horse," the test case. The doctor then insists on mailing him human blood every week, disguised as frozen orange juice in dry ice. It is never established whether this is the same California physician mentioned in Roulet Estate 01. (Roulet Estate 01, Roulet Estate 03) See also Frozen Blood Shipments.
Bruce¶
The ancient, senile owner of the clown mansion, the neighboring Victorian that the agents reach after a long cold walk. When the Biz knocks, Bruce answers only "We don't want any." The Biz uses his playbook ability to ask what will convince the target, learns that the old man is stuck in a rhythm and must be jolted out of it, and flashes his badge very forcefully. Bruce lets the agents in and wanders backward away from them. (Roulet Estate 02)
Businessman Hostage¶
A man in a suit among the hostages at the Brooks pharmacy. The gunman lets him out twice. The first time he runs out with a brick-sized cellular phone, warns that nobody is to go behind the building, gives the number 401-998-3147 and goes back inside. The second time he holds up a sheet of paper with the number written on it, after Andrew Howard has stalled by pretending he dialed a wrong number. (Roulet Estate 03) See also Brick Cellphone.
Chubby Local Police Officer¶
A local officer in a "little police outfit" who is supposed to be on holiday break when he arrives at the Roulet house in response to a report of bodies. He goes to the basement, confirms "Yep, that's two corpses," says he will call the medical examiner and take statements, and asks for a description of the thief for an all-points bulletin on the agents' stolen car. Andrew describes a bald figure, and when he later blurts out that the figure had nipples, a passing officer gives him a very slow thumbs-up. (Roulet Estate 02)
Clown Mansion Woman¶
A much younger woman at the clown mansion, whom the agents take to be Bruce's wife or daughter. She wears a silk bathrobe printed entirely with clowns and says the agents look like they are all freezing. She shows them to the kitchen phone, which Andrew uses to try Big Bill and the Biz uses to report the double homicide to the FBI. (Roulet Estate 02)
Elevator Kid¶
A child in a yellow shirt with a mustard stain who rides the elevator of Huell Kendrick's apartment building all day. He asks what happened to Huell's foot. Huell first answers "Got shot by an alien," then agrees it was diabetes, and the kid remarks that you can lose a foot to diabetes. He pushes all the buttons as Huell leaves. (Roulet Estate 03) See also Huell's Apartment Building.
FBI DC Operator¶
The polite operator who answers when the Biz phones the FBI's Washington office from the clown mansion as Special Agent Dick Baxter. She finds him in the system and logs a double homicide at 118 Benefit Street, Exeter, Rhode Island, with shots fired by "entities unknown" and a stolen vehicle. She is not familiar with the task force, but promises a local unit and backup, and warns that snowstorms may delay help by a couple of hours. (Roulet Estate 02)
FSB Officer¶
A silent escort who accompanies the Biz on his first-class flight from Vorkuta to Moscow. The Biz is handcuffed beside him, and the officer eats the Biz's steak on the plane but lets him keep the rest of the meal. He later stares at the Biz in the room in the former Soviet Parliament building. (Roulet Estate 03) See also Russian Government / FSB.
Markeith¶
An employee of the Brooks pharmacy who keeps the back service entrance locked, according to a police officer at the scene. He never appears; the locked door matters because Kurt Larson has to pick the lock at the back of the building. (Roulet Estate 03)
Mrs. McGann¶
Huell Kendrick's unfriendly neighbor. In March 1993 she hauls his wheelchair up the steps to the elevator landing after he guilts her into it. When Huell asks after her husband she answers, "You know, still dead." (Roulet Estate 03)
Pharmacist and Hostages¶
The 20 to 30 people held inside the Brooks pharmacy by the masked gunman. The store has been ransacked, and the pharmacist later tells police that the gunman was searching the back for beta blockers and could not find the supply. One hostage is left with a gut wound beside the front counter, and the pool of blood triggers Andrew's craving. Another hostage cowers behind the front checkout counter, and his gaze gives Kurt Larson a fix on the gunman's position. (Roulet Estate 03) See also Beta Blockers.
Ranasinghe Premadasa¶
The prime minister of Sri Lanka. In the April 1993 epilogue Kurt Larson says that he was dispatched to Sri Lanka to fight the LTTE and "successfully, if not prevented, then at least postponed" Premadasa's assassination, before being called back after Waco to help train American agencies. Premadasa never appears. (Roulet Estate 03)
Salvation Army Carolers¶
Teenage carolers who arrive at the task force office on Christmas Eve 1992 collecting for the Salvation Army. Huell Kendrick donates the rest of his cigarettes and the Biz donates a gold nugget. The kids whisper about whether the nugget is real, sing an encore of "Silent Night" and light up the cigarettes as they leave. (Roulet Estate 01)
Senior Russian Officer¶
A mustached officer with steel eyes and a red, runny nose who looks through the slot of the Biz's cell at Vorkuta. The Biz greets him in polite Russian, and the officer, repulsed, orders a guard to "get this man on a plane." (Roulet Estate 03) See also Vorkuta Corrective Labor Camp.
Taxi Dispatcher and Driver¶
The dispatcher quotes a three-hour wait when Kurt Larson orders a taxi to Pawtucket for the monk, using his own money. When the cab arrives, Kurt points to it, gives the Finnish Hare Krishna monk a wad of bills and the team's card, and tells the driver to get him where he is going. The monk shouts something incomprehensible out the window as he leaves. (Roulet Estate 02)
The Two Cowardly Cops¶
Two officers who crouch behind a squad car at the Brooks pharmacy, gesturing frantically, and then will not cross the parking lot to help. When asked, they give big thumbs-ups instead. Huell Kendrick vows to get them fired. (Roulet Estate 03)
Unnamed NSA Agent¶
The owner of the Herman Miller chair that Kurt Larson steals as Diane's Secret Santa gift. The chair is stamped "Property of the National Security Agency," and Kurt calls its owner "a weenus." Diane says she will burn her old chair "for the bugs." (Roulet Estate 01) See also NSA and Herman Miller NSA Chair.
Vorkuta Guards¶
The jailers of the Biz at Vorkuta, including "the kickiest" guard, who handles him roughly, and a less kicky guard with whom the Biz is on semi-good terms, who is absent in the scenes shown. The beatings have stopped about two weeks before the epilogue scene, and the Biz is left with bread pushed through a slot. (Roulet Estate 03) See also Vorkuta Corrective Labor Camp.
William S. Sessions¶
The FBI Director in 1993. Andrew Howard's colleagues at the Bureau run betting pools on whether he is blackmailing Sessions or having sex with him, since he is the highest-ranking person not yet replaced. Rumor has it that Floyd Clark (of uncertain spelling) will replace Sessions later that year, which is when the pools are expected to resolve. (Roulet Estate 03) See also FBI.
