Description¶
Frotter is a 50-something bearded bootlegger in overalls who carries a lantern and hauls a cart of bottles and chemistry equipment. He is talkative and pedantic, proud of belonging to a long line of Comstock bootleggers, and makes a pear liquor that he boasts will put a drinker on another plane of existence. He calls his place "mi casa" and the agents "Federales" (Appalachia 02, Appalachia 06).
History¶
Appalachia 02¶
Kurt, Andrew, Huell and the Biz meet Frotter on a trail in the woods near the Covenant. He relaxes when Kurt says they are Federales and not ATF. He explains that he has been helping the Covenant fix a methanol problem in their ritual beverage: natural yeast produces an enzyme that breaks down the pectin in fruit skins into methanol, and the thermostat on their old McMurray still has started to stick. Kurt asks about "Primenthol Greengrass" (he means the missing Willow), and Frotter knows only that she went missing (Appalachia 02).
He describes drunken hunting accidents involving the Daniel boys, and says that a couple of weeks earlier someone skulked around his ridge homestead. He saw only a pair of eyes in the dark, "tall, but, you know, not unusually so", which then ran off. The team marks his ridge on their map together with the road spot and the rabbit site, and the line points toward town (Appalachia 02).
Quote
"Good luck keeping those cultists from going blind." Dante (as Kurt), to Frotter (Appalachia 02)
Appalachia 06¶
At the hotel breakfast, Frotter arrives with the sheriff. He complains that the agents would not come shoot "that bear" for him ("what do I even pay taxes for?"), and the sheriff points out that he does not pay taxes and that the IRS has visited three or four times. Frotter reports a dead Bigfoot on his land and refuses to touch it for fear of diseases (Appalachia 06).
At his property, the outbuildings are hastily wrapped in blue weather tarps, and a large streak of gore next to a shack is introduced as "the bear incident". The "squatch" lies in a copse about 50 feet down the path. Andrew's investigation shows that it is a man in an expensive Chewbacca costume, soaked in real blood and shot in the back of the head like a gangland execution. When told it is a man in a costume, Frotter blames the bear, blurts "Wait, wait, hang on. He was shot?", and asks whether the dead man had really long hair (Appalachia 06).
Frotter whispers to Andrew that if the agents do not get a warrant for the buildings, he will let them search the property without one. Kurt checks one building anyway and concludes that Frotter is trying to brew beer with marijuana instead of hops. His guns are almost all shotguns and small-caliber pistols, and Kurt estimates the murder weapon was roughly a .357 Magnum. Frotter drives off in the sheriff's squad car, waving (Appalachia 06).
The dead man is later associated with Troy Cleaver.
Memorable quotes¶
Quote
"Listen, the day that I touch an undiscovered species— a corpse in the woods is the day that Frotter Comstock has lost his edge." Andre (as Frotter Comstock) (Appalachia 06)
Quote
"Sir, next time someone shows up with a dead Bigfoot, you should check if it's a man in a suit." Zack (as Huell), to Frotter (Appalachia 06)
Trivia¶
- Frotter's name is spelled with two Ts. Ezra jokes in Appalachia 06 about "Frotter Cumsock", and Rita notes that a search finds no Frotter Comstocks (Appalachia 06).
- Kurt asks him about "Primenthol Greengrass" when the missing woman is Willow (Appalachia 02).
