Description

Madeline is a young woman in a raincoat who drives a VW Beetle and plays Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at high volume (Summer Service 05). She is by turns darkly funny and frightened. She wants "somebody normal" to help her, and she distrusts both the church and the local police, saying she thinks they are "all fucking involved" (Summer Service 05).

History

The Summer Service

After a hostile Board of Selectmen meeting, Andrew Howard sees Madeline pacing the town hall parking lot in the rain, repeatedly looking at the team's car. She asks whether he is a cop, then demands his "position on Jesus Christ." Andrew answers that Jesus was an all-powerful alien who came to help guide humanity, and she says she just wants someone normal (Summer Service 05).

She reports that her uncle Arnold has not been seen for four days: he missed a meeting to help her sell her car, his gate is padlocked, and the police did nothing. She blames the church. Ma Gramoire had told her the team was in town. Madeline leads them in her Beetle toward the walled house on the island across the flooded bridge; at a red light she floors it and the team briefly loses her (Summer Service 05).

At the house, Kurt Larson picks the padlocks and Madeline opens the front door with her own key. She waits outside with Andrew while the others search the house. Kurt warns her to eat only sealed, imported food and no fish, and she mentions shopping at Whole Foods in Salem (Summer Service 05).

Afterwards Andrew shows her the severed head of the family dog and she screams, recognizing Puddles. He explains the parasite and the contaminated food and tells her Arnold will not recover. She says "I thought he meant botulism!" Madeline vows to burn the church. Andrew admits he is bad at comforting people and asks her to let the FBI do its job; Kurt shows her his hand grenades and asks her to wait because kidnapped scientists might still be inside. She makes him promise that "all of those motherfuckers are going to pay" (Summer Service 05).

Before the team leaves, the Biz plants a bug in her house, the team gives her pager numbers, Kurt gives her a joint and teaches her to make a Molotov cocktail, and Huell Kendrick gives her his favorite knife, Muriel, named for his wife. Kurt tells her to bar her window with a two-by-four and to get Ivermectin, lying to a veterinarian if she has to; she plans to go to Salem the next day. She asks for a grenade and a gun and is refused (Summer Service 05).

She is last seen alive at home and does not appear in Summer Service 06. It is never shown whether she carries out her threat.

Relationships

  • Arnold Weathers: her uncle. He was infected and found in his upstairs bathtub, and he was destroyed by Andrew and Huell. Madeline does not witness it, though she later sees the head of his dog.
  • Andrew Howard: her main contact; the only team member who stays with her through the fight.
  • Kurt Larson: advises her on food, the Molotov and Ivermectin, and talks her down.
  • Ma Gramoire: sent her to the team.

Abilities and equipment

Madeline has no special abilities. At the end of her scene she holds Huell's knife Muriel, the team's pager numbers, a joint and Molotov instructions.
