History¶
In Appalachia 01 the team picks the stately Smith Hotel over the "Express & Suites". The clerk has only two rooms left because of a conference of dental oncologists in town, and the team ends up in rooms 109 and 110 on the second floor at $55 per person per room. He mentions the hotel's old horse stable and mineshaft, and recommends the continental breakfast, with goat products and peach preserves from the religious community in Auraria. He describes the community as a gold-rush ghost town taken over about ten years earlier by people in long dresses, living in tents with no electricity and talking about the end of the world, and advises against staying there after dark ("I'm just not that big into getting wicker-manned"). He says he turned away teenage "UFO people" who wanted one room for four people and a dog (see The Circle Chasers). Off the record, he thinks the missing boy ran away and the woman left the cult.
In Appalachia 02 the Biz is considering the lock of Room 111 when the clerk comes to report the room as suspicious. It was booked under one name and paid for with a card in another, and the man who booked it offered him $100 to keep quiet. The man was carrying a gun and sounded like he was from the Midwest, which the Biz recognizes immediately ("That is him"). The clerk fetches the master key, which lets the Biz plant a spy camera and microphone (see Spy Camera and Microphone). Asked by the Biz about prostitution in town, he says there is none (try Atlanta). Later he salutes the agents in the hall and gives them a thumbs-up.
In Appalachia 03 the night clerk recognizes "Agent Howard" returning in the small hours, fetches another master key to let him in, and gossips again about the neighboring room, where "scary guys" have offered him money. He says he already told Andrew's partner, "kind of hot, bigger guy, sports jacket", meaning the Biz. He winks at Andrew and later brings up the hotel's depleted first-aid kit. See Next-door Hotel Guests.
Trivia¶
- In Appalachia 07 a boy of about seventeen at the same front desk gives his name as Talila, "Tully" for short (see Tully). The episodes never say whether he is the clerk of the earlier episodes.
