Overview¶
The group's room was booked under one name, occupied by someone else, and paid for with a card in a third name. The desk clerk told the party that scary men came and went and that one of them had offered him money to keep quiet (Appalachia 02, Appalachia 03).
Members¶
- The booker (unseen): an armed, rude, short-haired, military-looking man who sounded Midwestern and paid the clerk $100 for silence. When the clerk described him, the Biz said "That is him" (Appalachia 02).
- A curly-haired blonde woman in a bathrobe, who asked a battered Andrew Howard "Are you okay, honey?" in the hall (Appalachia 03).
- A suited man with a military haircut, who whispered to the woman, steered her back inside and glared at Andrew.
- A laughing man in a big cowboy hat and dark sunglasses, whom Huell Kendrick glimpsed entering the room and found oddly familiar for a split second. He is never identified on screen.
History¶
In Appalachia 02 the clerk reported the room to Dick "The Biz" Baxter and lent him a master key. The Biz entered room 111 alone, found a delivered basket of wine and chocolates and a room that looked staged for a sexual encounter, and hid a motion-sensing spy camera and microphone there, the camera beside the VCR and the microphone in the bedside drawer. He suspected a setup, possibly involving kids (Appalachia 02).
The guests crossed paths with the party in the hall in Appalachia 03, after Andrew returned to the hotel by cab (Appalachia 03).
In the epilogue in Walkers 01, the public story is that FBI agents were caught surveilling Governor Clinton in a Georgia hotel room, and a talk-show host blames Jan Martense for it. The Biz, interviewed, says he thought he had been spying on a prostitute and had not known Clinton was in town. The episodes never state outright that the guests were Clinton's party, but the sequence points that way. See the Clinton surveillance scandal.
