Safe Environment Fund fenced site¶
The Safe Environment Fund fenced site (also called the fenced polygon or the "scribble site") is a barbed-wire enclosure in the woods near Radford, Virginia, owned by the Safe Environment Fund, where the missing FBI agents were last headed and where the team's trespass leads to the "fence incident."

Description¶
The site is one of the irregular polygons on the missing agents' map, found in the missing agents' camp, which also shows an illegible scribble beside one boundary. A quarter mile short of the scribble the team meets an eight-foot chain-link fence topped with barbed wire and wrapped in polymer privacy sheeting printed "Safe Environment Fund / No trespassers," with dim red "solar lights" in the trees. Followed to the left, the new fence joins an older fence matching a polygon on the map. The team reasons that the new fence went up after the agents vanished, so the agents probably went straight to the scribble (Radford Horrors 02).
The "solar lights" are motion-triggered alarms that whoop when tripped. Elsewhere inside the polygon are locked shipping containers and a locked temporary building (Radford Horrors 02).
Notable places within¶
- The scribble: the spot where a tree had been cut down and removed that very day, with bleached ground, dug-up patches and heavy foot traffic (Radford Horrors 02).
- Containers and temporary building: locked; the team does not break in (Radford Horrors 02).
History of events there¶
- Cold open. Before the credits, figures in blue gloves and bunny suits comb the woods in a grid while a helicopter circles; a worker hands a blood-streaked handgun to a suited supervisor, who bags it. The camera crosses the barbed-wire fence to reveal the Safe Environment Fund logo (Radford Horrors 02).
- The fence incident. At dusk the team hikes in. Andrew Howard tears the barbed wire apart bare-handed and the alarm sounds. Kurt gets over with difficulty, Huell is helped over and jolts his injured foot, and Webster fails and hangs from the wire until Andrew pulls him down. Armed security guards arrive on ATVs. Webster screams "FBI!" and levels his shotgun; a guard tasers him and his shotgun fires wide. Kurt fires a P90 burst into the air and the guards retreat. Andrew shoots a guard through the leg, and the guard shoots Andrew in the chest; the bullet stops about an inch from him. A voice on the guard's radio demands the team leave and says "lawyers and emergency response" are coming (Radford Horrors 02).
- The scene. Lawyers follow and film the team to the scribble, repeatedly asking for a warrant. Kurt finds a professional cleanup: the smell of bleach, dug patches, a removed tree, and luminol that shows nothing, not even wildlife blood. On a high branch he scrapes a glob of pearlescent, oil-sheened goo that smells like the moth's compost-and-rot odor; Webster tastes it (bitter, then a sweet aftertaste) and Andrew whispers "Caterpillar slurry." The team is escorted out and the gate is locked behind them (Radford Horrors 02). See Pearlescent goo.
- Fallout. FBI Director Rudy Giuliani calls Webster about "the thing with the fence." A Bivens lawsuit is expected, a retroactive warrant is being sought, and a formal reprimand is possible. The guard who tased Webster has already been fired (Radford Horrors 03).
Trivia¶
- Andrew was shot in the chest, and the bullet stopped about an inch from him. Dante's casual recap at the start of Radford Horrors 04 has him shot "in the face" (Radford Horrors 04).
- It is never established whether the lawyers who follow the team belong to the Safe Environment Fund or to a separate firm.
