The Break Room (code 441)¶
The Break Room (code 441) is a fake break room on the Special Projects level beneath the Spud Hut plant in Dahlonega, which in fact held the ape-creatures that ambushed the party.

Description¶
The room lies behind a hefty, windowless steel door that opens into the hallway and is keyed with code 441. Jan told the party it held chairs and a drinks machine. It was actually a dark room of rattling steel cages, which Dante's character called a "werewolf feeding pen" disguised as a break room. Veterinary equipment, gurneys with thick leather straps and mining equipment were stashed nearby (Appalachia 08; Appalachia 09).
History of events there¶
The room appears first in the cold open of Appalachia 08. The camera glides to the double steel doors marked "Special Projects," drops through a floor grate, and enters a dark room of cages. Distant hooting and shrieking build, then stop as a dozen eyes turn toward the camera (Appalachia 08).
In the session itself, Jan Martense took the party down a second elevator ("Down here we do the toppings"), gave them the code, told them to wait five minutes, and rode back up on the excuse of an internal call. Kurt Larson opened the door and propped it with his shoe. While the others explored the floor, Dick "The Biz" Baxter heard the door squeak and saw a huge pale arm probe out. The party then fought five pale, hairy, long-nailed creatures. One threw Andrew Howard through the drop ceiling and juggled him, another punched a dog whistle into Kurt's throat, and Kurt ended the fight with a Claymore mine (see Claymore Mine). The blast destroyed the door frame and the opposite wall. The sheriff, Carter Burke, dived through the door into the room when he saw the mine (Appalachia 08).
The session closed on a table joke from Dante: "Who left the ape-men in the break room? Lenny."
In Appalachia 09 Andre remarked that "it was never a break room. It was just a door", a door onto the cage room that Jan had passed off as one, and that Claymore shrapnel had blown the door away completely. Clive explained that the creatures were "rejects," ape-men whose temperament did not take to training; Jan was too "sensitive" to dispose of them.
Inhabitants¶
Five untrainable ape-men, caged here and kept near the kennel (Appalachia 09).
Trivia¶
- The two episodes give different casualty counts. At the end of Appalachia 08, Andre said one creature was dead, two were badly injured and the rest had fled. In Appalachia 09, Andre's recap says the Claymore killed two, and the party tells Clive that two are dead and three are missing.
