Churchyard cemetery

The churchyard cemetery is the fenced graveyard in Ballard, Utah where Shelly Wilmarth lies under an expensive black granite slab, the target of the task force's exhumation plan in The Walkers in Skin.

Aliases The cemetery; Shelly Wilmarth's grave; black granite slab
Region Ballard, Utah
First appearance Walkers 03

Description

The churchyard is fenced and locked with a cheap '90s Master Lock. The gate opens with "the loudest squeal you have ever heard", and the grass is well maintained (Walkers 03).

Notable places within

Shelly Wilmarth's grave. A big black granite slab lies over the grave. It is undisturbed and clean, with trimmed grass around it and some trampled grass suggesting a recent visitor (Walkers 03).

History of events there

The first search. After about two hours in the bar, the team goes to the churchyard. Kurt picks the lock, and after about half an hour of searching they find the grave. Kurt notes that they could steal the body if the exhumation is denied (Walkers 03).

The court order. The sheriff files the paperwork, but the judge, who objects for religious reasons, will not budge for Andrew. The task force's boss Big Bill talks to the judge for about twenty minutes, and the exhumation is set for the day after tomorrow (Walkers 04). As a backup plan, the team rents ground-penetrating radar to check the casket first (Walkers 04, Walkers 05). See Exhumation of Shelly Wilmarth.

The radar test. In Walkers 06 the team takes the radar to the cemetery. At first it will not turn on, and its wires look chewed. Zack (as Huell) repairs it with aluminum-foil gum wrappers on a roll of double sixes. Pushed over the grave and compared against neighbouring graves, it shows something solid in the coffin, and the team is about 85 percent confident of it.

The exhumation order. At the start of Walkers 07, Andre notes that the team has the exhumation order for the next morning. The grave is never opened in any recorded episode.

Trivia

  • In Walkers 01 Alberta says her mother died two years earlier and shows an obituary reading winter 1990, while in Walkers 05 Andre says Shelly died "about, I think, like two months ago". The episodes never reconcile the two.
