Description

Kurt Larson reaches Omaha by passing through a naval research base and a keycode door and riding an elevator five stories below the ocean. Inside are steel corridors, a medical wing, and steel interview rooms where prisoners are held in plastic restraints with rounded edges. Visits are cleared in four-hour blocks (Walkers 01).

Playing cards are banned, so Kurt bribes the desk guard with ordinary cigarettes (he stresses they are not poisoned or hallucinogenic) and later keeps a promise to ask for anti-suicide playing cards for Jan.

History of events there

In the epilogue to The Things in Appalachia, Kurt interviews Jan in a steel room. Jan wears a gray jumpsuit and plastic handcuffs, cuffed to a plastic chair, with stitches and bruising. In the climax he was shot and then crushed by a falling ape, which broke his skull. They agree to a quid pro quo, and Kurt teaches him to make improvised playing cards from napkins and coasters. Jan tells how, about five years earlier, he drunkenly struck and killed a man in a black suit on a Georgia highway, found NSA identification on him, and found an ape woman, whom he named Shelly, in the man's van. He began the breeding and mining that became Jan's Conspiracy (Walkers 01). See also the dead NSA man.

Jan could not say why the Spud Hut facility exploded. Kurt, who suspects the explosion was deliberate, keeps the portal secret from him, since Jan appears not to know of it. Ordered not to attend David Letterman's taping, Kurt sees the Biz sweating on a TV while he waits.
