Minor locations: Radford (The Radford Horror and The Radford Horrors)¶
This page lists the minor places visited or mentioned in the two Radford arcs, from fast-food stops to a flooded colonial settlement.
Arby's¶
The Radford Arby's is the team's regroup spot and the starting point of Radford Horror 03, where Andre remarks that it "might be the worst chain in America". (Radford Horror 03) See Running gags.
Ballard, Utah ranch¶
The ranch in Ballard, Utah is mentioned in Moscow, where the Biz explains skinwalkers to Yeltsin: they mimic well but are not strategic, they turn erratic and violent when confronted, and the older ones are more convincing than new ones. It is the site of the Utah case, covered in Sherman Ranch and Ballard, Utah. (Radford Horrors 01)
Blockbuster Video¶
The back employee room of a Blockbuster Video, with a tiny VHS TV, is where the team views the diner's raid tape and has it copied by Harold. (Radford Horrors 04) See Harold and Diner security tape.
Dirt road and clearing¶
The dirt road midway down the mountain leads to a clearing where an armed group is camped: five or six Spanish-speaking people with flashlights, at least one shotgun and an idling vehicle. Dog's backyard¶
A suburban backyard, a few blocks from the Augustines, holds a doghouse with a snapped leash where a dog was taken at about 3 a.m. It is where the team finds the white powder. (Radford Horror 04) See White powder and Radford's missing dogs.
FBI headquarters¶
The FBI building in Washington is where the team is reassigned, with a smoky canteen, crowded elevators and winding corridors. In 1993 it is tense after Sessions's firing: the team waits outside the Director's office, Todd talks to Kurtis in the men's room, and Giuliani briefs the team in the Director's office. Hoboken motel¶
A motel in Jersey City, in the vicinity of Hoboken, is the non-horrifying but expensive overnight stop on the drive to Marblehead. (Radford Horror 08) See Marblehead.
Huell's apartment¶
Huell's flat is squalid: Roseanne is on, takeout covers the area around the TV, phone books sit on chairs, the microwave is full of dishes and there is a melted Pop-Tart in the toaster. Huell convalesces here after his leg injury. (Radford Horrors 01) See Huell Kendrick.
McDonald's drive-thru¶
The Radford McDonald's has a drive-thru wrapping three sides of the building, with the town's only Radio Shack across the street. The team commandeers the elderly couple's car here, and the drive-thru voice offers to dino-size the order for $11.95. It is also a stakeout food stop and the scene of the earlier carjacking. Post office¶
The roof of the Radford post office is used by an unknown watcher, and its parking lot holds the plates Kurt memorizes. Quest Coffee¶
Quest Coffee is the upstart coffee shop in Radford. When Kurt jokes about artisanal coffee shops, the sheriff names the only two coffee places in town: the diner and Quest Coffee. (Radford Horror 02)
Radford church¶
The Radford church hosts the town's community meeting at 4:30 p.m., with the sheriff, the FBI and the priest speaking in that order; the town hall is out because of a roof leak and black mold. Molly briefs the team in the back break room beforehand. It is not the old-town church of the climax. (Radford Horror 05) See Old-town church.
Radford family-medicine clinic¶
The family-medicine clinic is the doctor's office in town, where the team takes the heroin sample for testing. (Radford Horror 07) See Dean Lawson's heroin and cash.
Radford old town and mill¶
The colonial old town is a flooded, abandoned settlement with stone foundations around the church. A mill a quarter mile to the west survives, overgrown, and the team does not find the heroin there. (Radford Horror 08) See Radford old town flood and Old-town church.
Radford Sheriff's station¶
The small station has a broom-closet records archive of shelves, boxes and filing cabinets, where Andrew finds the Radio Shack file and the missing-dog folder. Its small morgue, with nitrile gloves, linen aprons and a Vicks tray, is used for Amanda's autopsy. In 1993 the station is lit up at night, and Molly keeps files and the posters there. Radio Shack¶
The Radford Radio Shack was the site of Abe's spacesuit break-in three years before the story. The robbery file describes a cinder-block break-in, the spacesuit, fingerprints from heavy gear, stolen modems and a cell phone, and a bus ticket to Richmond. River near the church¶
The river near the old-town church is where the team tests the heat-ray flashlight. (Radford Horror 08) See Flashlight weapon.
Roanoke Airport¶
Roanoke Airport is the nearest airport, about 45 minutes from Radford by road. It is a small regional airport with 737s and private traffic, ringed by mountains; Freak's Cessna is parked in a corner. (Radford Horror 02, Radford Horror 04, Radford Horror 07) See Freak and Annabelle.
Roanoke hospital¶
The hospital in Roanoke runs the DFA test on the rabid rat that bit Webster and supplies the HDCV vaccine. (Radford Horrors 03) See Rabid mouse.
Salem, Virginia¶
Salem is the town of the ultralight owner, off to the right of the team's search area. (Radford Horror 04)
Science fair gymnasium¶
The school gym, with foam boards, potato batteries and a volcano, is where Kurtis meets Toby Garland. (Radford Horrors 01) See Peggy Browning.
State police headquarters¶

Tyler's trailer¶

Underhill's mother-in-law suite¶
