Minor organizations: The Summer Service¶
These are the agencies, groups and businesses that touch the Marblehead case without getting their own page. The larger groups include the Sons of Adam, the EPA/USGS survey team and the Marblehead Board of Selectmen.
Boat crew¶
Also called the cold-open gunners. Four men in dark camouflage, black hats and face paint, aboard a steel boat with no running lights at night in the cold open of Radford Horror 08. They aim a hydraulic tripod gun with a thermal scope at a target that "has a human with it," and one of them is Mr. Miller. Their commander tells the others to keep their eyes up because "if we don't kill it, it's going to be on us in a second." Their affiliation is never stated. (Radford Horror 08)
CDC, FEMA and NCEH¶
The health and emergency agencies that start calling the FBI after McManley finds worms in the wine and a nerve-agent-like toxin. Diane relays that they are calling the secretary pool, that the governor may deploy the National Guard and close the beaches, and that many more people will arrive in a day or two. The team argues over what to tell the CDC, and Ezra says they should not let it "go into this blind and then blow the lid on something way spookier than just a regular disease." Their personnel are still days away when the case ends. See Synthetic nerve agent. (Summer Service 03)
College protesters¶
Students who gather outside Marblehead's City Hall with signs reading "No more dead fish! No fish for science!", "No Nukes" and "Close Seabrook!" They blame the newly opened Seabrook plant for the fish die-off. Huell tells the Biz to flick a cigarette at one, and it hits a student in the eye, so that he drops his sign crying. See Marblehead town hall. (Summer Service 03)
EPA and USGS¶
The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Geological Survey sent a field team to Marblehead about a month after an unexplained explosion blew out windows and made townspeople sick, to check whether a seabed natural-gas leak had gone off and whether human life was at risk. The team went missing, and by the case file's account had been gone about four days. The missing scientists are covered at EPA/USGS survey team. (Radford Horror 08; Summer Service 03)
FBI counterintelligence¶
A branch of the Bureau that has surveilled the Biz for a couple of weeks because of his money problems. The Biz does not know. When Kurt confronts the watcher on the roof, he tells the agent his unit is his to govern and that the matter will be fine, and then plays it down to the rest of the team. See FBI. (Summer Service 01)
The "Marines"¶
Also called the frequency B voices. Unseen, frightened voices on the radio during the hotel siege, who tell the team to "get off the fucking line," claim to be "the goddamn Marines" and order everyone to switch to frequency B before the line goes dead. Dante wonders why Marines would be in radio range and apparently in fear for their lives, and later says the team should find out why they heard them. In Summer Service 06 Andre again calls the radio contacts who track the creature "the Marines." See Mystery covert group. (Summer Service 05; Summer Service 06)
McManley's forensics team¶
Also called McManley's crew, the M.E. team or the interns. A set of browbeaten interns and assistants working out of McManley's RV under Donald McManley. They process Amos Shaw's house, examine the worms and wine, and in Summer Service 05 receive Puddles' head. McManley lends the party his assistant Henry for the ivermectin run. See also M.E. assistant in pajamas. (Summer Service 03; Summer Service 04; Summer Service 05)
Scott Insurance¶
Also given as Scott Insurance, Boat Specialty. The family boat and car insurance business that Irene Scott runs from the Scott home. The phone is answered "Scott Insurance, we do boats and cars," and the sign outside reads "Scott Insurance, Boat Specialty." Irene wants to know whether the scientists ever sent off the blood samples they took. See Irene Scott, Lena Scott and The Scott home. (Summer Service 01)
U.S. Navy¶
Also called the Navy. Following the unrecorded Summer Service 02, Big Bill says in Summer Service 03 that he can probably get a submarine out to examine the wreck with better instrumentation, and in Summer Service 04 he reports that a Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine, which had been hunting Soviet boats, has been retasked to look at it. In the finale a submarine, the USS Oklahoma City, fires everything conventional at the creature and is pursued, and Big Bill reports afterward that "we lost one of our submarines too." See The stealth wreck and USS Oklahoma City. (Summer Service 03; Summer Service 04; Summer Service 06)
