Description

The store has wraparound laminated-glass windows, one of them riddled with bullet holes, and a door on the corner set at about 45 degrees; Rita compares it to a CVS. A service entrance at the back is kept locked by someone named Markeith. An access ladder for roof maintenance, currently retracted and six or seven feet up, leads to a roof door and a cramped crawl space full of air-conditioning equipment above a drop ceiling. Inside, the pharmacy area has been trashed, with plastic tubs and pill bottles scattered across the floor, and a checkout counter stands near the front. A parking lot lies in front, with snow on the ground. (Roulet Estate 03)

History of events there

  • The arrival. A local cop reports that the agents' stolen car has been spotted at the Brooks. When the agents arrive, it is parked beside a squad car with two cops hiding behind it. The young balding cop is shot dead as he steps out of the car. (Roulet Estate 03)
  • The briefing. Officer Todd surrenders command to Andrew and relays the gunman's demands: a fueled Range Rover with no trackers, no police cars in the lot, and all cops inside within ten minutes, naked, to be handcuffed to shopping carts. A businessman hostage runs out carrying a brick-sized cellular phone and recites a number, 401-998-3147, for the agents to call. (Roulet Estate 03)
  • The plan. Shots from the store flatten the tires of the car the agents are pushing, so Kurt strips a popped tire, soaks it in a flask's worth of vodka and stuffs in a bag of crusty donuts from the squad car to make a smoke screen. Andrew stalls the gunman on the phone, asking whether a Ford Bronco will work, and takes off his shirt after being told to strip, which draws the old woman in the VW Beetle. The Biz climbs the ladder, picks the roof door lock with a credit card and creeps through the drop ceiling. Kurt picks the back door and creeps toward the counter, where a hostage's gaze tells him where the gunman is. Andre estimates 20 or 30 hostages from the shapes in the window and the crowd outside. (Roulet Estate 03)
  • The fight. The Biz shoots first through the ceiling and is hit in the thigh by a Mosin-Nagant round, falling to the tile. Huell tackles the gunman and takes a shot through the foot. Kurt binds him. Police remove the alien mask, and the man, revealed as the Roulet Intruder, is given beta blockers when he begins to collapse. (Roulet Estate 03)
