Gold Bars

The Gold Bars are the hundreds of pounds of cast gold stacked on a kitchen table in a room beneath Dahlonega. They are the product of Jan's Conspiracy and its ape-man mining shifts. Half of the stockpile is already missing when the party arrives, and the party, Clive and the sheriff pocket some of the rest.

Type Item (treasure)
Found at The gold room in The Dahlonega Gold Mines
Producer Jan's Conspiracy
Holders The party, Clive and Sheriff Carter Burke (what they carried out)
First appearance Appalachia 09

Description

The gold has been melted down and cast into bars. When Clive opens the door, the table is "mostly full of gold", amounting to "hundreds of pounds", and "like, half of it" is missing. (Appalachia 09)

Properties

Andre handled the gold as a physical burden. A reasonable amount, such as a couple of small bars in the pockets, costs nothing, but an unreasonable amount gives -1 forward to physical rolls until it is dropped. (Appalachia 09)

History

The operation's output

Clive explains that there is a lot of gold left under Dahlonega and that the ape-men are a good workforce for digging it, since they do not talk to anyone. Dante sums it up: "Apes mine gold. Tell nobody, 'cause ape." Clive says a mercenary did the melting. He was promised a third of the gold, and says Jan wanted at least $100 million, or it was not worth doing. Ezra tells him he was never going to see that third. (Appalachia 09)

The party takes its share

When Clive shows the team the gold room, he curses Jan for the missing half, then asks to take some himself after "a year and a half" of work. The party agrees, under the banner of "civil forfeiture". Huell and the Biz take unreasonable amounts and clink as they walk. Kurt takes a reasonable amount, "mostly for my wife and kids". Andrew finds more room in his bag than expected, and the Biz mentions needing a new pair of night-vision goggles. The sheriff announces, "I'm taking some, and we're gonna figure out the legality of this later." Dante and Rita reassure him that his department, not he, is keeping it. (Appalachia 09)

At the end of the episode, the party emerges from a ladder in the woods outside the Spud Hut plant, and the sheriff wraps his arms around a tree and sways gently. (Appalachia 09)

Jan's plan

In the epilogue, Jan, held at the CIA's Black Site Omaha, tells Kurt that his plan had been to melt the gold down, take it to a dealer and work out the laundering later through acquaintances who set up businesses for that purpose. (Walkers 01)

Unrecorded session

The finale of the arc, Appalachia 10, was never recorded. The fate of the bars after Appalachia 09 is not shown on air.
