Description¶
Ovain is a big, smooth alien who wears no clothes, with weird "foam-rubber flesh," radially symmetric hands, a bunch of eyes and a tail. He can levitate and fire jets of white ki fire from his fingers, and he is about seven and a half feet tall. He is chronically anxious: he stands with his arms crossed, rocking and murmuring "This year, this year, this year, it's gonna be okay" in the briefing tent, and he struggles with being a person in public. Background¶
Ovain won last year's tournament. About ten years earlier he took over the world, then finished a nervous breakdown, became catatonic and was institutionalized. As part of his rehabilitation, the authorities encourage him to funnel his energy into the tournament instead of world domination. His aide Mr. Cartwright says that a program of online dating, added to his treatment, has gone badly and that he has been journaling about killing the president again. Mirabeth once tried to recruit him, in a conversation Andre calls "a fucking disaster from top to bottom." (Philosopher's Fist)
History¶
When the tournament is suspended over a doping scandal, Ovain starts to panic ("Not this year, not this year, no") and rises out of his chair. Derk walks over and tells him that Mirabeth says he is weird. Ovain, now ten feet in the air with white fire gathering at his hands, points at Colonel Sparago and screams "You did this!" Derk intercepts the blast, and it backscatters into Ovain's eyes. Ovain shoots up through the tent roof and vanishes into the sky. That night the news on the motel TV shows him fighting the nation's military at the edge of the capital. (Philosopher's Fist)
At the Presidential Event Hall the next morning, he crashes through the stained-glass skylight shouting "Not this time! You goddamn dog man! You're not taking this room!" at the Werewolf President. Derk slams him down by the tail and then bear-hugs him, so that his ki jet hits the floor and both fall into the basement. Ovain cries, "You're ruining it! Why, why does this always happen? It's just like Father." Derk tries to bond over dad problems, and Ovain asks how scorpions taste ("Really bad." "Good!") before punching Derk in the groin to no effect. He asks "What are you?" and begins charging a building-shaking attack, with energy dripping off him and congealing into a fluid web. Derk jumps him out through the skylight into space, where Ovain asks again, telepathically, what Derk is. (Philosopher's Fist)
As Derk springboards away, Ovain tells him, "You have been a strange but worthy adversary. I salute you. I am leaving this planet and its Tinder. I'm going back home." (Philosopher's Fist)
