Description¶
Ned, a feed-store worker, tells Kurt he finished the machine that morning: "As soon as the power went out, I knew today was the day." He says it carries machine guns, "a bunch of pipe bombs in the back" and a flamethrower. When the convoy is loading up, Andre describes the cab as looking "like a Soyuz capsule." (Walkers 09)
History¶
Dust behind the convoy reveals the killdozer closing in as the party rides back through abandoned Ballard. Ned believes the collapse is a ruse and calls on every patriot to "take up arms and/or bulldozers and fight the communist menace." Dante's Kurt calls him "an asset" and slows down to talk to him. Kurt pitches Ned to the major, who, after a long look through the window, says "Fine" and slows the convoy to 20 miles an hour. (Walkers 09)
When a strange field halts the convoy and the major orders heavy equipment carried and civilians left behind, Ned flatly refuses to leave the killdozer ("I did not spend six months welding this thing"). The group stuffs it with grenades, radio equipment and heavy supplies, and he gives a big thumbs-up. (Walkers 09)
At the community center the killdozer charges a fence with cars piled up behind it, probably most of the cars from Roosevelt. The naked defenders swarm it, and Kurt burns off climbers with the flame light. On its second pass around the parking lot it is crushing people, and as the invisible waves come through it levitates for a few seconds at a time. Kurt warns Ned that the dozer keeps levitating; Ned answers only with "Die, commie freaks!" interspersed with machine-gun fire. (Walkers 09)
At the end, with everyone outside unconscious and black craft overhead, the killdozer is stuck in a tree, which Andre says is "struggling a little bit" to support it. Ned's fate is never shown. (Walkers 09)
