Description¶
The park is described as fairly upscale, a double-wide park with a couple dozen kids playing in a large overgrown field behind it. A rock shaped like a man's head, "Injun Rock," points toward the bent tree where Gene was taken; see The Field and Bent Tree (Appalachia 02). The Nicks live at number 513 and the Cartwrights at 920. Edward Nick Sr. remarked that his family stayed at the Smith Hotel "when the trailer park went down about five years ago"; the episodes never say what happened.
History of events there¶
The Nick trailer. The morning after their drive, the party reached trailer 513, where Kurt got in by saying "We're with the Federales." Edward Nick, a boy of about five or six, watched cartoons, gave Andrew Howard a Transformers toy and a juice box, and handed over a drawing of a crouched hairy figure. He said "He was fast." He first said he saw it yesterday, but his mother corrected him: three days earlier. His mother directed the party to the bent tree and mentioned the Cartwrights, out-of-season hunters and the Covenant in Auraria. She offered tuna green bean casserole, and Edward Nick Sr. arrived at dinner in gray Spud Hut coveralls to report that his coworker Aaron Richters had left on a smoke break and never come back (Appalachia 02).
In the field behind, the party found Gene's Shoe in a high branch, with a tuft of pale, soft hair caught in the laces. Kurt and Huell concluded the boy was dead.
The Cartwright trailer. In Appalachia 04 the team chose to interview "dead kid mom" Monica Cartwright before visiting the Covenant. She was drinking warm white wine among bottles on the couch and sprayed a broken air conditioner with WD-40. She said Gene vanished while playing with "the Nick boy," who screamed. She reported seeing drunk off-season hunters in gray jumpsuits and sunglasses in a Jeep with a big cage and shotguns, and said that a month earlier a naked, hairy figure resembling Chewbacca had stood at her driveway with a big backpack, then climbed into a black sedan. Sheriff Burke had dismissed this because she was drunk. She told the team not to come back without her son (Appalachia 04). The Nick boy's surname is heard as both "Nick" and "Nichols."
