Description¶
The hall has sturdy, heavy stone walls and a banquet table with canapes (some of them little wonton-wrapper lobster rolls that remind Derk of scorpion). Guests are arranged in a ring around the room, with the president going down the line. In the dead center is a roped-off marble area with an elaborate geometric floor pattern, beneath a stained-glass skylight. The skylight is the room's one weak point. The roped-off area is not in use for the event; it holds maintenance signs and tarps and is guarded to prevent anyone cutting through to the president. (Philosopher's Fist)
History of events there¶
Security. At the door a guard sweeps each guest with the detector wand. He waves Derk through after the "metal plate" story and never scans Mirabeth. Derk is offered controlled substances four times in the hour afterward and declines each. The Pure Human Martial Artists have been deputized among the Secret Service. (Philosopher's Fist)
The flag. Derk presents his flag to the werewolf president, who praises it and gives him a presidential-seal sticker. (Philosopher's Fist)
The plan. Mirabeth, assessing the room with Derk's input, works out the skylight weakness. She borrows the guard's wand, tells the guards at the rope that the president wants "inconspicuous" heroes, and stations Derk under the skylight. When one guard asks him to prove he can do kung fu, he bends a quarter. (Philosopher's Fist)
The fight. Ovain crashes through the skylight shouting "You goddamn dog man! You're not taking this room!" Derk slams him down by the tail, bear-hugs him so that a ki jet hits the floor, and both fall into the basement. When Ovain starts charging a building-shaking attack, Derk jumps him out through the skylight into space. All the windows blow out, people are thrown to the ground, alarms go off and the hall is left with a flaming hole in the floor running up through the skylight. (Philosopher's Fist)
Aftermath. Mirabeth raises a Divine Armor force field around herself and the president for about thirty minutes, and the Secret Service moves them to a safe room for several hours. (Philosopher's Fist)
