Description¶
Because the big house is rented to the billionaire, Alberta offers the "grandma cottage" and promises to warn security so the team is not shot (Walkers 02). Walt lets the team in with keys hidden under a ceramic frog. The air conditioner is at the back and its door must be kept open to work; the back door does not lock but has a deadbolt on the inside; and the toilet gurgles for a long time before it flushes, and then only weakly. Walt's house rules are to keep the headlights on when driving at night and to stay out of the big house and barn. Of the bedrooms, one is a child's room with colorful cartoon animals on the wallpaper and a toddler-sized bed. The bedroom windows face the big house, while the big living-room window faces away from the ranch (Walkers 02). Later episodes add twin mattresses, a Bakelite rotary phone and a washing machine with no dryer (Walkers 04).
Walkers 02 says the house has four bedrooms. In Walkers 07 Andre describes it as having two bedrooms, one of which the team is not using, plus a living room with a kitchen area and a laundry room and mud room at the back where the back door is. The episodes do not reconcile the counts (Walkers 07).
History of events there¶
The goose. Nancy, the ranch's enormous goose, besieges the house from the first day. When the team flees to the car, she bites Huell's nose so hard it bleeds and swells shut. When the team gets back that night a goose-shaped silhouette hustles at them out of the dark and rattles the doorknob from the other side (Walkers 03). In Walkers 04 the team traps her inside, then runs "Operation Get Goose Out" with Kurt on stilts. She escapes, leaving the house trashed and goose dung on Huell's pillow.
Calls and planning. The house has a working phone, from which Huell calls McManley (Walkers 03, Walkers 04). Andrew spends hours seeking the exhumation order, and the Biz arranges the radar (Walkers 04).
The night event. After a long day the team sleeps inside when the night event strikes. Huell's world pivots 90 degrees, Kurt wakes in Saigon, the Biz loses every filling and bleeds from the mouth, and Andrew is found screaming inside the refrigerator, from which he floats to the ceiling. The silverware is piled on the couch, belongings are scattered, and the house has shifted a few inches so that its stairs no longer line up with the front porch (Walkers 05).
The break-in. About 11 p.m. on the night of Walkers 07, the Biz wakes and sees something low through the peephole. A naked giant, about 6'7" to 6'8", enters through the mud-room back door with a key and carries an over-under shotgun. He fights the team, and Andrew's Cast Out Evil leaves him limp. He later dies in Roosevelt. See Naked intruder.
