Ma Gramoire¶

Ma Gramoire is a tiny, blunt, absinthe-drinking old woman of Marblehead, poisoned by the sea, the last known contact of the missing scientists, who later sends Madeline Weathers to the team.

Description¶

Ma Gramoire is 4'7", wide and solid, with a cane and a permanent baked-in squint. She is folksy and profane ("sun in my buns"), calls Kurt "son," drinks absinthe over ice, and distrusts the government, the water and fish. Her house, marked "Gramoire Residence," is a slightly broken-down suburban house on the main island (Summer Service 03).

The Summer Service¶

She is on the missing scientists' contact list. When Kurt Larson phones, she is hard of hearing ("Don't shout at me") and hangs up on hearing "FBI": "I don't talk to feds" (Summer Service 01).

In person she says she will speak to the government only if it brings back her National Guard son Jordan. Dante rolls a 7 on Manipulate Someone for Kurt, a partial success: she will help only if he does something right away to show he means it. Kurt calls Big Bill from her phone, and Big Bill's secretary agrees to request Jordan Gramoire for the deployment. She then gives Kurt a grilled cheese and absinthe and says she was poisoned by dipping a toe in the sea. The scientists visited her in the hospital, had interviewed other victims and had got nowhere with the Board of Selectmen; they planned to check the town's only lighthouse. In Summer Service 05, Madeline Weathers says Ma Gramoire told her the team was in town. After the team learns that vodka kills the worms, Dante (as Kurt) speculates that this is why Ma Gramoire, a steady absinthe drinker, is unaffected (Summer Service 05). See Madeline Weathers.
