Description

Maggie is young, attractive and blunt, and fiercely protective of the bar's licensing. She is profane ("pardon my French"), fixes the bar's cassette jukebox, and keeps order: "Not in the bar. Not again... Parking lot." She introduces herself only at the end of the night: "I'm Maggie, by the way. Not that anyone asks." (Walkers 03)

History

After meeting Sheriff McDermish, the team goes to the nervously quiet bar across from the courthouse. Maggie glares at Andrew Howard and demands ID, saying "I had to make sure it wasn't another Mormon fed." She makes him drink a free vodka-Coke shot, then softens and gives him a root beer float, and later half-gallon milkshakes on the house, waving off his attempt to pay. The Biz coins "Half-Gallon Howard" (Walkers 03).

She recognizes the Biz from TV as the man who "spied on Bill Clinton" and gave a weird interview, and remembers Huell on the couch looking like an armed hostage. She says, "I don't think Bill Clinton would be caught dead in Ballard, Utah." She also serves the sheriff red wine in a pint glass of ice ("Coming up, you fucking freak") (Walkers 03). See Clinton Surveillance Scandal.

Maggie's gossip includes:

  • The community center is being built half the county away from the community, pushed by Deborah Wells, whom she has known since the first grade and dislikes; Pueblo ruins were bulldozed for it despite a protest. See Community center.
  • Ballard has about 30 blackouts a year, four new school computers that never worked, a stink at the high school, and people who can get a college degree "magically disappear." See Disappearances in Ballard.
  • The crazy rich guy renting the ranch refused a drink in a weird way and warned her off the water.
  • She saw what she thinks was ball lightning streak past her car on the ranch's back road and shoot straight up; the man with her swears they nearly got abducted (Walkers 03). See The dusk event.

When a drunk Huell tells her the town water has semen in it, the party half-confirms it, and she reasons it must be bulk-bought animal semen with a paper trail (Walkers 03). See Ballard water contamination.
