Region Ballard, Utah
First appearance Walkers 02

Description

A full grocery with baloney, Spam, white bread, tortillas, American cheese, pasta, mayo, mustard, Ball Park franks and potatoes. It is open nine to five, Monday through Saturday (Walkers 02). Andre calls it "a general store" when the team drives into town, and the clerk tells them "it's a grocery store"; Walkers 06 calls it the grocery store, and it has an alley beside it and a back break room with Go Fish cards, magazines, a decanter of Tang and a nicotine-stained door.

Inhabitants

  • The beehive clerk (Walkers 02). A middle-aged, lifelong resident with an enormous beehive hairdo. She greeted the team with "Y'all are new, right?", insisted Ballard was normal ("The ranch is weird, but that's the county"), resented the community center, blamed the mayor and "the goddamn busybody" Deborah Wells, and would prefer a clinic. She misses Reagan and traded Rod Serling jokes with Kurt. She mentioned Edward Douglas, a local man who shot half his foot off and drove an hour for treatment.
  • The listless clerk (Walkers 06). The only person on duty, who said the rest of the rotation (a weekend girl, a janitor and a stock boy) was not due. The episodes do not say whether she is the beehive clerk.

History of events there

The grocery run (Walkers 02)

The team bought bologna, white bread, mayo, American cheese, cheap beer and Ball Park franks for $35.25. Howard awkwardly questioned the clerk while the others watched. The team told her to drink only bottled or well water because of the contaminated supply, saying "We're from the government"; see Ballard water contamination. Dante (as Kurt) remarked to the Biz that "Andrew has no game" (Walkers 02).

Huell's failed meeting (Walkers 06)

After an unknown caller phoned about "your colleague" and told Huell Kendrick to come alone to the store and let himself into the little room in back, Huell went alone. In the alley beside the store a "homeless" man asked for a dollar, lunged and bit Huell's wrist, shouted "Pig!" and ran off with the dollar. The clerk bandaged him and said "we don't got homeless in Ballard". Huell waited in the break room with a hand on the P90, found nothing, and returned to the guest house, over an hour later, with a bloody bandage on his hand. See The "homeless" man. The recap of Walkers 07 says the bite later gave the faction Huell's tissue. See Replication.

Trivia

  • The "general store" of Walkers 02 and the "grocery store" of Walkers 06 are treated as one shop; the clerk's own words in Walkers 02 use both terms. Stewart's, the grocery in Roosevelt, is a different shop.
