Gray van crew¶
The gray van crew is a five-man paramilitary-style team that drives gray vans around Radford, abducts people, scrubs crime scenes of evidence, and bags the creature in the Douglas Pinball Emporium. Their employer is unknown.
| Type | Organization (unidentified) |
| Aliases | Paramilitary cleanup; pinball arcade kidnappers |
| Affiliation | Unknown; the team suspects the Safe Environment Fund |
| Status | Active (as of Radford Horrors 04) |
| First appearance | Radford Horrors 03 (the arcade abduction, cold open) |
Overview¶
The crew first appears as the unseen force behind the abduction of the arcade's overnight worker Elizabeth George. The cold open of Radford Horrors 03 shows muffled thrashing, the sound of a Taser, a woman's limp arm and a man in a black balaclava carrying her off. When the team investigates the Douglas Pinball Emporium, they find a broken Taser tine with blood, a smear of blood on a machine corner, a missing first-aid kit and hand towels, and signs of recent cleaning. The security tape has been swapped, and the back fence has been cut and repaired (Radford Horrors 03). The kidnappers are evidently professionals.
The diner footage¶
In Radford Horrors 04 the waitress at the Lonely Mountain Diner gets her camera working, and its footage shows the raid on the emporium across the street at about four or five in the morning. A gray van pulls up and five men hop out: one with long brown hair in a ponytail, the others with military haircuts, several with their faces covered. A shadow that moves wrongly shows in the emporium window. One man opens the lock with what could be a bump key, there is a scuffle inside, and a few minutes later three of the men carry two bags to the van. The others follow with equipment, and the van leaves (Radford Horrors 04).
Kurt's Investigate a Mystery roll reads this as an organized cleanup team, more paramilitary than military. The ponytailed man moves like an action movie rather than a real combat veteran, and Andre likens him to a LARPer. The shadow in the window was not human and seemed to be trying to get out as the door opened (Radford Horrors 04). It is the emporium intruder.
Earlier activity¶
- The waitress says she has seen the gray vans for a couple of months, around the time of the "right to roam" dispute over the woods, and that several vans were also parked around the Ferry Lodge during the IRS raid. Kurt wonders whether they are associated with the Safe Environment Fund (Radford Horrors 04).
- Harold, the Blockbuster clerk, saw a homeless man dragged into a van by a man with a ponytail a month and a half to two months earlier; the man later reappeared. Andre confirms that this matches Billy Thornton, who had complained to the team about being abducted (Radford Horrors 04).
- Sheriff Molly Underhill has seen gray vans around town and assumed they belonged to the construction work (Radford Horrors 04).
Unresolved¶
The employer is never established. The team suspects the Safe Environment Fund because the vans appeared when it did, and Daniel Webster passes that suspicion to FBI Director Rudy Giuliani, who says he will put a researcher on it (Radford Horrors 04). It is not confirmed on screen that the same crew took Elizabeth George.
Trivia¶
- Ponytails become a running gag after Billy Thornton's story of being "kidnapped by chimps and molested by John Travolta." It culminates in Zack asking, "Does she have a ponytail?" about a customer Harold describes (Radford Horrors 04).
