Matt McCready

Matt McCready is a leather-jacketed teenage biker in Radford, Virginia, the unofficial boyfriend of Amanda Lucky, who lives and works at the Alpine Lodge ski resort.

Description

When the team finally meets him, Matt is a teenager at the night desk of the lodge's visitor center. He is friendly, wry and guilelessly helpful, and he gets a visibly lost look when Amanda comes up. The Luckys say he rides a motorcycle and smokes pot (Radford Horror 01, Radford Horror 06).

History

Radford Horror 01 to 03: a name on the list

Sheriff Roosevelt identifies Amanda's biker friend as "Ed McCready's boy, Matt McCready." Liam Lucky and his wife point the finger at him, saying he lives with his father, Ed, at a tourist ski lodge in the mountains, separate from the Ferry Lodge where the team tried to find rooms (Radford Horror 01). In Radford Horror 02 Yobiah Whateley lists the McCreadys among his sons' schoolmates, and the pharmacist says "McCready works up at his folks' place" (Radford Horror 02). In Radford Horror 03 the team calls him the unofficial boyfriend, in contrast to the official boyfriend Dean Lawson, and notes that he lives at the ski lodge outside of town, but has not yet interviewed him (Radford Horror 03).

Radford Horror 06: the night watch

The team plans a stakeout from the ski lodge's water tower. At the off-season Alpine Lodge visitor center, Andrew finds Matt on night watch because town kids have been spray-painting the property. He serves sad instant coffee and writes a Sharpie liability waiver for climbing the water tower, which the agents sign. He gives them the key to the locked ladder and asks for it back before they leave.

Matt tells them he was Amanda's friend; he calls her "a very internal person" whose smile lit up the room, "nice to be with, hard to be close to." He says Dean Lawson threatened to shoot him or have him killed when he asked when Dean last saw Amanda, that Dean has scary, "methy" friends, and that Dean has a family cabin about a mile from the lodge, which he marks with an X on a tourist map. About a week earlier, Amanda had seemed to want to tell him something at school but never got to it. He adds that the lodge gets UFO hunters every year and sells merchandise, and that while maintaining the ski lifts he felt something big and silent pass over him, smelling like compost or "an old closet." He now carries a shotgun.

After the encounter with the craft, Andrew throws the key back at the visitor center door and Matt catches it mid-joint (Radford Horror 06). See Lawson cabin.

  • Radford Horror 01 has Matt living with his father Ed at the lodge, while in Radford Horror 06 he says his uncle owns the resort and he helps out. The episodes never address how the two fit together.
