Roulet Basement¶
The Roulet Basement is the dirt-floored cellar of the Roulet house, where the agents dig up parts of two bodies from a chemical-soaked trash pit.
| Type | Location (cellar) |
| Aliases | Trash pit; dirt cellar |
| Region | Inside the Roulet House, Exeter, Rhode Island |
| First appearance | Roulet Estate 01 |
Description¶
The cellar is unfinished, with a dirt floor, a water heater in one corner and amateur electrical wiring running everywhere, which Andre says was not the work of an electrician. A pile of broken appliances is shoved into one corner, and trash has been buried in another. There are buckets of cleansers and a big jug of Dawn dish soap, a bleach spray bottle, Abraxas scrubbing powder and a huge glass jar of cocoa-butter lotion with a hand-shaped scoop taken out of it. A tool area holds a pair of chain cutters. The power and water are cut off at the street, probably for non-payment after the owners went missing. (Roulet Estate 01, Roulet Estate 02)
History of events there¶
In Roulet Estate 01, Kurt checks the cellar and tries the breakers, finding that the power is off at the street. (Roulet Estate 01)
In Roulet Estate 02, Kurt goes down for tools and investigates the trash pile. He concludes that something was poured on the buried trash, perhaps to sterilize it, and that under the chemical smell there is rot. Digging with a crowbar, he is grabbed by veiny hands bursting from the dirt, sees the face of a Vietnamese prison guard and empties his sidearm into the hole. He comes to curled in a fetal position beside the pit, saying he was "back in Saigon." The hand he shot turns out to be real: a withered human hand in a sleeve, shot several times. Kurt: "In my defense, I thought it was the VC." Zack (as Huell): "Probable cause. That's probable cause." (Roulet Estate 02)
Andrew matches the ring on the hand to the wedding photos, identifying Margaret Roulet. Further digging turns up parts of two bodies, too decayed to show a cause of death (the agents would need McManley), with their cloth bleached and dissolved by something caustic, apparently poured in to control the smell. The agents assume the second body is Mr. Roulet. The agents later conclude that Kurt's hallucination, and Andrew's in the chimney, came from the house's drugged water. The local police confirm that there are two corpses. (Roulet Estate 02)
