Description

The property sits up on the ridge, a hillside with outbuildings that Frotter had hastily wrapped in blue weather tarps before fetching the sheriff. The buildings house his moonshine work and a marijuana-beer experiment. A large streak of gore beside one shack is introduced as "the bear incident." Below lies a leaf-strewn copse of scrubby land, reached by climbing down, beside a walking path with ATV tracks (Appalachia 06).

History of events there

Appalachia 02. The party met Frotter on the woods trail near Auraria. He told them that a couple of weeks earlier something had skulked around his ridge homestead and that he saw only a pair of eyes in the dark, "tall, but not unusually so," which ran off. The team marked his ridge, the road spot and the rabbit-snatch site on a map, and the line through them pointed toward town (Appalachia 02). See Woods Trail and Rabbit Site.

Appalachia 06. Frotter arrived at the team's hotel with the sheriff, reporting a dead Bigfoot on his land and refusing to touch it. At the property the "squatch" lay about 50 feet below the buildings. Andrew Howard rolled a 12 to investigate and learned it was a man in an expensive Chewbacca costume soaked in real blood, shot dead-center from behind in what looked like a gangland execution. See Chewbacca Costume and Troy Cleaver.

The body was a white male of 25 to 35 with a military haircut and every clothing tag cut out. Kurt Larson read faded anchor and trident tattoos as Navy SEAL emblems. Blood pooling showed the body had not been moved. ATV tracks stopped near the body and continued down the mountain toward the freeway, and the Biz found a snapped plaster-of-Paris toe matching fake Bigfoot prints, with the molds missing. See The Bigfoot Hoax.

Kurt stuck his head into one outbuilding for twenty seconds and concluded that Frotter was trying to brew beer with marijuana instead of hops; the firearms in view were almost all shotguns and small-caliber pistols. Kurt judged the murder weapon to be roughly a .357 Magnum at point-blank range and did not think Frotter was the killer. Frotter whispered an offer to allow a search of the land if the agents did not get a warrant for the buildings, and Andrew answered with a wink and "I understand what you're saying," which Rita noted was not actually an agreement. The sheriff drove Frotter away to the station, and the team left the body for McManley to collect and went on to the dry cleaner where the costume had been stolen (Appalachia 06).

Later in Appalachia 06, Kurt asked that a sample of the gore smear Frotter blamed on a bear be tested against the other tissue the team had gathered. The result is never given (Appalachia 06).
