Spud Hut Menu¶

Description¶
The Spud Hut has no indoor dining room and no menu board. Customers order at a window, and the counter worker offers to "hear the specials" and then recites roughly 100 numbered dishes from memory. Andre read the whole list aloud at the table, to the point that the players stopped him only by asking for it to be posted. Afterward he admitted, "I should have prepared five hundred." The specials include a Cobb salad spud (the first on the list), peach pie à la mode, poutine, escargot, banh mi and s'mores, with the curry chicken spud at number 23. Dante complains that there is no fish and chips spud. (Appalachia 02)
Properties¶
- Every dish is a stuffed or topped potato, a "spud", in small, medium or large. The potatoes arrive within a minute, and Andre rates them from an A to a C-plus depending on the spud. (Appalachia 02)
- Customers who order one of everything and finish it eat free; those who cannot finish pay about $5,000. The worker adds that the 100 specials are only part of "the full menu". (Appalachia 02)
- Appalachia 06 adds more items: Viennese beef, a "non-authentic" au gratin, jambalaya, tikka masala, huevos rancheros (number 48), chicken fajita (number 39), French dip, Monte Cristo and spinach and artichoke spuds. The "first three prime spuds" are the peach pie à la mode, BLT and taco supreme. (Appalachia 06)
- The Spud Hut has a liquor license. In Appalachia 07 the margarita spud is a potato skin with a slit in the top, full of margarita; the bacon burger spud has a patty "made entirely of crumbled bacon"; and the "special taco taco spud" comes with a whole octopus on top. (Appalachia 07)
History¶
First visit¶
In Appalachia 02, the team reaches the window before closing. The counter worker recites the specials while the line behind them nearly riots. Zack tells the staff, "Sir, sir, I am an officer. Do not touch me. I am listening to the menu." Dante drops a pile of matchsticks and asks how many there are, and the worker answers "forty-three" and is exactly right. The team orders Southwestern, poutine, BLT and chicken Parmesan spuds. The worker then closes the window and walks into the woods. (Appalachia 02)
Appalachia 06¶
In Appalachia 06, the worker recites the specials again and recommends the huevos rancheros spud to Andrew, who orders the chicken fajita with the peppers picked out. The Biz switches his order from tikka masala to French dip. Dante tells the worker, "You will be hearing from Langley." (Appalachia 06)
The secret layer¶
In Appalachia 07, the team returns for dinner, with the players wanting to recruit the counter worker. Huell and the Biz each get margarita spuds, and Kurt buys one with several fake IDs and photos of his kids. The Biz eats his first octopus and judges it phenomenally cooked: "Surf and turf, what's not to like?" Delilah of the Circle Chasers devours four chicken pot pie spuds. The octopus spud and the whispered "taco taco spud" tie into the Cryptogram Secret Menu. (Appalachia 07)
A whole octopus later turns up in a "Potatoes" sack on the wrecked Spud Hut Truck.
Trivia¶
- The 100-item menu is a running table joke. Zack explains why nobody stopped Andre: "stopping you would be like losing." (Appalachia 02)
- Zack compares the specials to the McRib, which comes back every so often with another hundred options. Dante suggests the equivalent would be a "Carno Spud", a potato made entirely of meat. (Appalachia 02)
- When Dante tries to jump in with an order, Andre tells him, "You don't know how long this menu goes on, motherfucker. Don't commit to things you don't understand." (Appalachia 02)
