Minor characters: The Summer Service

These are the minor and background characters of the Marblehead case, from the families on the previous team's contact list to the sailors in the finale's cold open. Bigger roles such as Ma Gramoire, Jester and Esteban have their own pages.

Big Bill's secretary

An unnamed male secretary at FBI headquarters who is never seen. When Kurt phones Big Bill from Ma Gramoire's kitchen, he is transferred to the secretary, who agrees to put in a request for Ma Gramoire's son to join the Guard deployment, which cheers the old woman up. (Summer Service 03)

Big Bill's wife

Heard rather than seen in the finale's cold open. A phone rings in a dark bedroom, Big Bill answers under the blanket, and when his wife asks what they want in the middle of the night he sighs and says he has to go into work: "The Protestants are trying to kill my detectives." (Summer Service 06)

Carter's courier

A friendly driver of a military-surplus armored truck who delivers the heavy crate Kurt ordered from his old contact Carter. He says Carter sends his love, that this is the last favor, and that afterward they are even. On his way out he says he is going to get sushi, and Kurt warns him not to eat anything in town. Andre then quips that sushi was not popular in 1992 and tells the table to pretend he said crab legs. The crate holds the Davy Crockett. (Summer Service 04)

Cartwright family

One of the families on the previous team's contact list, along with Ma Gramoire, Lena Scott and O'Donnell. Andre reads out the list in Summer Service 01 and Dante calls Lena Scott first. The team never interviews the Cartwrights. The surname recurs in the Things in Appalachia with Gene Cartwright. (Summer Service 01; Appalachia 02)

College researcher

A young woman who appears only in the unrecorded Summer Service 02. She had found a dead body under the sunken wreck, and she took the team down to it in an experimental submarine. This is known only from the recap in Summer Service 03, which also says the team suspected the body belonged to one of the missing EPA researchers. See The stealth wreck and the experimental submarine. (Summer Service 03)

Dr. Khan

The doctor at the Radford ER who phones Andrew in Summer Service 01 to say that the lab mixed up his clotting-disorder blood samples after his nosebleed and that he has discarded what was left. He promises to mail an information packet, and Andrew gives the task force office address so that Diane can hold it. Andre stumbles over the name on the call, saying "Khan" and then "Kahn." (Summer Service 01)

Esteban's uncle

An unseen member of the Marblehead church who volunteers to do his nephew's laundry and adds bean juice to the wash. As Esteban puts it, his uncle is "in that church and he's trying to keep me a virgin." Esteban works out what is happening and thanks the team with a basket of fries with extra salt. In Summer Service 05 a girl covering his shift at McDonald's confirms that he has figured out it was his uncle. (Summer Service 04; Summer Service 05)

FBI counterintelligence agent

Also called the watcher or the roof watcher. A young agent with binoculars on the roof of a store, surveilling the Biz. Kurt spots him and chases him to the foot of a fire escape. The man greets Kurt by name ("Hi, Mr. Larson. This is awkward"), shows his counterintelligence credentials and runs off after Kurt tells him to get out of there. Kurt tells the rest of the team only that it was "some skeletons in my closet." See also FBI counterintelligence. (Summer Service 01)

FBI switchboard operator

The unnamed operators of the FBI switchboard, reached by payphone or hotel phone. In Summer Service 03 the operator authenticates Huell by name and badge number, warns of a chemical-weapon exposure alert on Marblehead and promises reinforcements. In Summer Service 05, with Big Bill unreachable, Kurt asks the switchboard for someone with decision-making power. The operators report that the National Guard is stuck about forty miles out in the storm and cannot send a helicopter. (Summer Service 03; Summer Service 05)

Harvard's Bait Shop owner

A middle-aged woman who greets Huell as "officer" and sells him a large trash bag for the severed arm. Huell hands over five dollars and takes no change. He also asks about the shop's axolotls, which her cousin draws. See Harvard's Bait Shop. (Summer Service 01)

Jordan Gramoire

Ma Gramoire's son, a National Guardsman. She says she will talk to the government when it brings her son back: "He's still alive, he just don't call." Kurt asks Big Bill's secretary to have Jordan assigned to the Marblehead deployment, and the secretary says he will put in the request. Jordan is never seen. (Summer Service 03)

M.E. assistant in pajamas

Also called the RV assistant. One of Donald McManley's assistants, who stays in the mobile lab. He answers the door when Andrew brings back the living head of Puddles and wordlessly takes the writhing bag, and he is left behind with the RV when the team heads out in the finale. He is not named and is a separate person from Henry, who spends the night out on a Vespa. (Summer Service 05; Summer Service 06)

McDonald's girl

A teenager covering Esteban's shift at the McDonald's when Huell walks in after cutting his own arm. She reports that Esteban "figured it out. It was his uncle" and has gone to sleep before a test. Esteban himself is not on screen. See McDonald's. (Summer Service 05)

Mr. Miller

The smoking gunner of the boat crew in the cold open of Radford Horror 08, which teases the Marblehead case. The commander says, "Mr. Miller, you may fire when ready." Miller takes a long drag on his cigarette and answers, "All right, smile, you son of a bitch," and then everything explodes at once before the credits. His fate is not shown. See Boat crew. (Radford Horror 08)

O'Donnell

Also called Denver O'Donnell. The keeper of Marblehead's cemetery. Briggs says he "does a good job" and that his family has been in town a "long, long time." Asked whether it is the church's graveyard, Briggs says he does not think so, since it is the town's only one, and that he has never heard the keeper say any of the weird things. The previous team's contact list includes a Denver O'Donnell, and the episodes do not say whether this is the same man. The team never talks to him. See The cemetery. (Summer Service 01)

Old jogging woman

A soaked woman of about ninety who appears in the cold open of Summer Service 04, jogging in the rain until her daughter comes out to fetch her. She tells her daughter, "Pastor says God is coming," promises not to let her go to hell, and runs off into the rain. (Summer Service 04)

Readful Things clerk

The clerk at the Readful Things bookstore, where the Biz goes for his 1980 edition of Moby Dick. She has the glow, a sallow face and a fishy open mouth, and she follows him around the shop with her head like a goldfish. See also The glow. (Summer Service 04)

Sergeant Jefferson

A National Guard sergeant who broadcasts on all frequencies that the Guard has arrived in Marblehead and taken command, and who asks for a consult with the FBI agents. He gives his name as both Sergeant Jefferson and Sergeant Johnson, and Andre notes that it is clearly the same voice repeating the message. Kurt answers but gets no reply, which tells the team that the Guard has a more powerful transmitter than they do. He is never met. (Summer Service 06)

The suited man

Also called the Edgar suit guy, after Andre's description of "big Edgar suit energy." A man in a suit at the back of the town hall meeting who unnerves the room. As the team leaves, Andre describes him standing motionless in the parking lot in the rain, soaking wet, staring at them. He is never explained. (Summer Service 05)

Toilet guy

Also called the alley watcher. A man watching the team's hotel from the alley under the second-floor bathroom window. Andrew drops onto him with a toilet tank lid, which hits him on the head with a "wet crunch," and the man falls limp. While the players settle on a cover story in Summer Service 06, Dante asks whether the one man they killed was "Jester or the guy out the window with the toilet," and Rita counts both: "Two men." See Toilet tank lid. (Summer Service 05; Summer Service 06)

Unnamed hotel guest

A man who cowers in the corner of his room when Andrew kicks in the door during the hotel siege. (Summer Service 05)

USS Oklahoma City captain and sonar operator Davy

The submarine crew in the finale's cold open. Davy reports that the bogey has gone on land, then a small explosion, then "the craziest sound I've ever heard." After the bogey returns, closing at 60 to 70 knots, the captain, "done with this spooky shit," orders a full about and everything conventional fired. The last glimpse is of the pursuit at 80 knots, and their fate is not shown. Big Bill later says that a submarine was lost. See USS Oklahoma City. (Summer Service 06)

Young lieutenant

The officer at the National Guard checkpoint at the entrance to Marblehead. He first turns the team away, saying nobody is in or out of the town because of a biological incident, then takes them to an older officer once they say they are the FBI agents the Guard asked for. See National Guard checkpoint and Older Guard officer. (Summer Service 06)
