Description

Andre describes it as something like an Olympic village, but a lot less nice: a bunch of huts in a big field by the beach, with running water, cots, tiny dorm rooms and very basic supplies. Because tryouts are open, four or five hundred people are staying there, many of them hillfolk who rarely shower. A big tent is put up every year for the mandatory safety briefing; its air conditioning makes a "wow, whoa" noise and cannot cope with the crowd. Entrants are not allowed to leave, and the perimeter has a high wall with guards about every hundred feet, which "is not unbreakable, but it's not quietly breakable." (Philosopher's Fist)

The briefing tent

Mirabeth and Derk walk into the tent among the crowd. Mirabeth hands out business cards, and an elderly weasel-man trainer shields his enormous lizard-man protege from her poaching. Colonel Sparago opens the briefing, quizzes Derk on the two rules (do not kill the audience or the judges) and is interrupted by the news of the doping scandal. Then Ovain panics, blasts Sparago, is deflected by Derk and rockets through the tent roof. (Philosopher's Fist)

Leaving the village

With entrants forbidden to leave, Derk jumps the wall with Mirabeth on his shoulders and lands about a quarter mile away beside Miguel's hot dog taco stand, where he eats 98 hot dogs. (Philosopher's Fist)
