Description¶
In the cold open of Appalachia 04 he is a sweating man in a brown suit with a suitcase of vacuum cleaner brochures and a big brown Bakelite vacuum cleaner. His brand is a running question. Mother Dahlia Riversand says it was "like, a Con-A-Wear, something like that. It looked cheap", but Zack presses her on whether it was a Kirby, and Andre retcons it to a Kirby.
History¶
The episode opens on a horror-styled scene in a gas-lit tent near Dahlonega. Jeremy changes into a thin white robe and follows a candlelit path to a river red with clay, where four women in white dresses kneel in the mud. An older man with high cheekbones kisses his forehead and hands him a jar of dark liquid with peaches floating in it. After Jeremy drinks, the sound goes muffled and the camera unsteady. The man wades in with a candle, chants in Latin and plunges Jeremy under the mud, and he vanishes beneath the surface. The older man is not named in the scene. See Covenant Peach Preserves and Covenant Beliefs (Appalachia 04).
Later in the same episode the team visits Auraria, and Dahlia invites them to "the baptism this evening" for a door salesman who came to sell to the Covenant and whom they "managed to talk into it". When Andrew asks to speak with him, Dahlia at first refuses, saying he is "in preparation for his christening". She relents after Rita rolls an 8 to Manipulate Someone and Andrew plays lost and haunted. She tells Andrew she can see the devil standing right behind him, and lets him talk to Jeremy through the tent wall.
Jeremy assumes the FBI is there about "those deaths" and swears he did not know the vacuum cleaners were "like that"; Andrew explains he is not there about that. Jeremy says he got hooked on Quaaludes and lost his wife, his children and his job, then took up selling vacuum cleaners, only for the machines to kill some people, so he switched companies. His car broke down near Auraria, and he tried to sell vacuum cleaners to a community that has no electricity. He calls Elijah Ray "a special man that knows things" and thinks the Covenant may manage his life better than he has. He is out of Quaaludes and asks Andrew for some. Dahlia promises that at the least the Covenant will not give him more (Appalachia 04).
The team leaves without stopping the ceremony, so the cold open is presumably his baptism. His fate afterward is not shown.
