Minor items and artifacts: The Things in Appalachia¶
Minor items of The Things in Appalachia: smaller props, tools, vehicles and pieces of evidence. Larger objects have their own pages, such as the Chewbacca Costume, the SHA Tracking Device and the Claymore Mine.
1991 Ford Explorer¶
The Explorer is the team's near-new replacement vehicle, used after the EPA and NRC hold their old car and equipment following Marblehead. It has four-wheel drive, power windows and a working air conditioner and radio. In Appalachia 02 the team keeps Gene Cartwright's shoe in its trunk until McManley arrives, while the old car, with the team's night vision, is still held for decontamination. (Appalachia 01, Appalachia 02)
Ancient Pickaxe¶
In the second cold open, a Spud Hut worker finds an ancient pickaxe in the sand of a rocky fissure and raises it as a weapon just before he is attacked. In Appalachia 03 the team finds an old, bloody pickaxe in the Death Cave among skin, bones and a folded face. The players assume it is the same tool. (Appalachia 02, Appalachia 03)
Animal Crate¶
The animal crate is a large crate that Jan Martense wheels from a service lift to a red pickup in the cold open of Appalachia 09. Its contents are never revealed. In Appalachia 09, Dante guesses that Jan took a sample with the crate and left. See Hidden Ape-man. (Appalachia 09)
Animal Hair Coil¶
One of the dead drifter's snakeskin cowboy boots holds a coil of animal hair, alongside plastic bags and duct tape. Kurt reads the hair as material for faking Bigfoot evidence and the bags and tape as possible body-disposal gear. See Snakeskin Cowboy Boots and The Bigfoot Hoax. (Appalachia 06)
Anti-suicide Playing Cards¶
At the Omaha black site, ordinary playing cards are banned, so Kurt shows Jan Martense how to make improvised cards from bits of napkin and coasters. He promises to ask the desk guard for proper anti-suicide cards and keeps the promise. (Walkers 01)
Bear Suits and Shotguns¶
The handlers in the Spud Hut basement keep bear suits, 12-gauge shotguns, pepper spray, air horns and goalie face masks in a gear room. The party takes them as armor and weapons; the bear suits give 1 armor. Clive wears the upper half of a suit and a face shield. (Appalachia 09)
Bigfoot T-shirt¶
Andrew's souvenir "Bigfoot-sized nuggets" shirt is given to him at the Consolidated Gold Mine after his own shirt is soaked in blood. He wears it under his suit in Appalachia 04 and again in Appalachia 06, where every NPC still clocks him as a cop and he says, "I love this T-shirt." By the ninth episode it is bloodstained again. (Appalachia 03, Appalachia 04, Appalachia 06)
Case Dossier¶
The Dahlonega dossier is a hastily assembled file that Diane delivers: a child missing about a week, another child claiming a Bigfoot sighting, a woman missing since the day before, four or five sightings, and the Dahlonega Times clipping. Andrew notices the woman vanished in Auraria, not Dahlonega, and finds an unexplained article about religious vision ceremonies tucked in the back. See Diane. (Appalachia 01)
Circle Chasers' VHS Footage¶
The Circle Chasers' tape is a three-second clip in which a rabbit freezes in the trail and a gray, man-sized blur grabs it. The teens promise a copy in exchange for a blank VHS. See Rabbit Thing. (Appalachia 02)
Clinton Polaroids¶
The Clinton Polaroids are the photographs at the center of the surveillance scandal. On his show, David Letterman reveals that they were taken with a Russian camera, which is news to the Biz. See the Clinton Surveillance Scandal. (Walkers 01)
Creature Blood Sample¶
After Kurt shoots the pale creature in the hidden mineshaft, the team collects a small ring-bagged blood sample, among the evidence handed to McManley. McManley complains the round was too small a caliber. Dante notes a blinking red light on it and wonders whether it is a bioweapon. (Appalachia 03, Appalachia 04)
Creature Remains¶
The Claymore blast beneath Spud Hut leaves gore and bone fragments in the hallway. Dante concludes that Spud Hut is cloning an army of chimp-men, and Rita suggests they are replacing human labor in the mine. The Claymore itself is described at Claymore Mine. (Appalachia 08)
Dog Whistle¶
Kurt blows a dog whistle at the creatures in the break room as an improvised light-and-sound weapon. One creature punches it into his throat, and the shriek agitates the others. Kurt clears it before the creatures close in. (Appalachia 08)
Eviction Letters¶
Mother Dahlia Riversand shows the team copies of the Covenant's eviction letters, kept for a lawyer. They name only the law firm Jackson and Lee's, not its client, and Kurt takes notes. (Appalachia 04)
Flash-paper Instructions¶
The Biz's dead-drop bag holds thin burn-after-reading flash paper telling him to install the camera in room 111 of the Smith Hotel before midnight, retrieve it 24 hours later and mail the undeveloped film to an address to be supplied. The rest of the team is not told. See Room 111. (Appalachia 01)
Forklift¶
Kurt hotwires a forklift in the Spud Hut basement (Act Under Pressure 7, with a penalty because he must keep a hand in the wiring) and uses it to ram a flimsy door and the elevator's security grate. He later raises the tines to stand on them. The braided cable that would release the elevator's shutter stays twenty-five feet out of reach. (Appalachia 09)
Frederick's Game Boy¶
The gray Game Boy that the German boy Frederick was playing in the Consolidated Gold Mine is found bleeping on the floor when he vanishes, one of the few traces left. His mother later says he was playing his video game when she heard a clatter. See Frederick. (Appalachia 03, Appalachia 04)
Frequencies Bracelet¶
Andrew wears a bracelet from his doctor that he says is "more just frequencies." He puts it on Kurt as a focus and uses Lay on Hands, which heals Kurt's 2 harm but gives Andrew a massive nosebleed. (Appalachia 03)
Gold Nugget¶
Kurt lifts a small gold nugget from the freshly dug 10-to-15-foot shaft bridged by two-by-fours in the hidden tunnel. It is kept and photographed as evidence. See Gold Bars. (Appalachia 03)
Green Garbage Bag¶
The Motel and Suites clerk warns the team never to open the green garbage bag in the dumpster, which holds linens from a porn shoot booked under the name Jenny Maxine. It is left unopened. (Appalachia 06)
Hooper's Business Card¶
Eduardo Hooper hands Kurt a business card as a contact for "dangerous" 1960s chemistry sets, including ones with uranium, which he sells from a storage facility. The Biz already has one. See Eduardo Hooper. (Appalachia 07)
Hotel Master Key¶
The Smith Hotel desk clerk lends the Biz a master key that opens any room, to be returned afterward. The Biz uses it to enter room 111 and plant the spy camera and microphone. See Smith Hotel Desk Clerk. (Appalachia 02)
Huell's Dragon Knife¶
Huell replaces his knife with an embarrassingly large one, engraved with a dragon on the hilt and marked "Nippon Steel." (Appalachia 01)
Hunters' BBS Card¶
The Circle Chasers give Kurt a card with the number of their bulletin board system in exchange for his pager number. See The Circle Chasers. (Appalachia 01)
Ivermectin Bottles¶
Huell finds three or four ivermectin bottles in McManley's bathroom, all but one used, left from the worm infection after Marblehead. The drug is described at Ivermectin. (Appalachia 01)
Kurt's Escape Kit¶
Kurt's escape kit holds makeup, prosthetics, wigs, sunglasses, several outfits and forged credentials from several countries, including fake press IDs for four countries and a "Brazil" ID. His original kit was irradiated with the old car, so he fetches his complete backup from home, rolling 12 on Preparedness. He uses it to disguise Andrew and hands out Hawaiian shirts as "urban camo." (Appalachia 07, Appalachia 08)
Kurt's Shoe¶
At Spud Hut Corporate, Kurt props the "break room" door open with his shoe. When the arm reaches out, the door sticks on the shoe, and Kurt shoots it through the gap. (Appalachia 08)
Luminol and UV Light¶
Kurt passes a Preparedness roll (Sharp) to have his forensic kit of luminol and a UV light when the team's night vision is stuck in the decontaminated car. (Appalachia 02)
Newspaper Bigfoot Photo¶
The Dahlonega Times photograph is a blurry, Patterson-Gimlin-style shot credited to Charlie Briggs. Huell's Investigate a Mystery (10) says it could be a man in an ape suit, and Kurt rates it about 50th percentile for faking. See The Bigfoot Hoax. (Appalachia 01, Appalachia 02)
Plaster Bigfoot Molds¶
At Comstock's land, Ezra's roll finds a snapped plaster-of-Paris toe and fake Bigfoot prints in the mud. The molds themselves are missing, so someone cleaned up after the killing. Earlier, the team found two suspiciously clean giant footprints, a sneaker edge and a cigarette butt near the circle site. (Appalachia 02, Appalachia 06)
Severed Ape Hand¶
Andrew pries the severed hand of Big Bob off Huell and keeps it as a trophy. Kurt warns it is bad luck. (Appalachia 09)
Snakeskin Cowboy Boots¶
The dead drifter's snakeskin cowboy boots identify his bag in the Motel and Suites dumpster. One holds a coil of animal hair and the other a walkie-talkie. (Appalachia 06)
String Bean's Uniform¶
A spare uniform belonging to the absent deputy String Bean is lent to Andrew as part of his disguise at Spud Hut Corporate. It is ruined in the fight below. See String Bean. (Appalachia 08)
Walkie-talkie¶
The walkie-talkie is the dead drifter's radio, hidden in a snakeskin boot. Kurt records its frequency to catch any contact with the man's associates. (Appalachia 06)
Women's Shelter Cards¶
Kurt carries a stack of women's-shelter hotline cards and presses them on Covenant women, including Clover, River and Jeremy. Clover is unmoved ("We're getting a boiler"). (Appalachia 04)
Yeti Fur¶
Andrew digs up a handful of white Yeti fur he forgot to turn in, and a clump of it, still slightly bloody, falls to the floor of the Oval Office. See Andrew's Satchel. (Walkers 01)
