Derek Edwards¶
Derek Edwards is a tall, bearded amateur photographer and contractor for Auraria's small newspaper, the Gold Bug, whose Chewbacca costume was stolen from Apollo's dry cleaners and later turned up on a dead man.

Description¶
Derek is quite tall, with a very long beard, a ponytail and a vest. He has no military record. He uses computers a great deal and runs the newspaper's website, and he puts out hunting-blind cameras to photograph deer. He is cooperative (Appalachia 06).
History¶
After the team finds a dead man in a Chewbacca costume on Frotter Comstock's land, Kurt goes to the Gold Bug to find the source of the newspaper's Bigfoot photo. A pinched older woman at the shopfront names the photographer as "Derek Richter", and Andre immediately corrects it to Derek Edwards. She says he is a contractor rather than staff, and volunteers that she believes he is gay, which prompts Andrew to point out that gay people can have friends. She fetches a number from a dusty Rolodex (Appalachia 06).
A young-sounding man who gives his name as Carlos, and who says he is a friend of Mr. Edwards, answers the phone and hands it to an older-sounding Derek. Derek says the photos came from a motion-sensor camera, so nobody helped him. When Kurt mentions the Chewbacca costume, Derek says his own was stolen: he sent it to be dry cleaned eight months earlier and it vanished from the rack. He had bought it for cash at Comic-Con, with no receipt, and says it smelled strongly like "fat nerd", which is why he was having it cleaned. The cleaners was Apollo's, down on Second (Appalachia 06).
At Apollo's, the man at the front desk confirms the theft. The latch on the double door of the storage area had been broken for months, and he paid Derek $100 for the loss. He recognizes the photo of the dead man as an out-of-town drifter who stood around watching, sometimes with a walkie-talkie, and who he thinks stayed at the Motel and Suites. The lead points the team toward the dead man, later identified as Troy Cleaver, and not toward Derek (Appalachia 06).

- The name "Derek Richter" was Andre's slip: he notices at once that he had already used "Richter" for Aaron Richters and corrects himself.
