Description

Mauden is an older man who wears a small gold cross around his neck. He is kind, grave and polite. He offers the visiting agents Vicks VapoRub for the smell of the morgue but says he usually avoids it himself, because smells can be diagnostic. He is Radford's family doctor and its coroner, and he used to work at the town's addiction clinic, which is how he recognizes needle scars (Radford Horror 05). He is not the psychiatrist; that is Dr. Lawrence Lori (Radford Horror 04).

History

Radford Horror 04

Mauden is first mentioned at the end of the episode, when Molly Underhill tells the team that a young girl's body, probably Amanda Lucky's, has been found by the interstate. It is going to Dr. Mauden, the family doctor for many families in town, who delivered her. The autopsy is set for a couple of hours later and the agents are invited. Molly says he is "pretty troubled by the whole situation" (Radford Horror 04).

Radford Horror 05

At the sheriff's station the sheriff introduces Mauden to the team as the doctor who will perform the autopsy. He tells them he delivered Amanda, says a Hail Mary over the covered body, switches on a tape recorder and describes her injuries: part of the face missing, a large ragged abdominal wound with organs removed, and puncture wounds in the wrists and ankles. He attributes the face and belly damage to coyotes after death. Kurt's questions establish that the nails were pulled through the limbs and that lividity shows she was nailed up, so she was crucified. Old needle scars, six or seven months old, and one fresh needle mark appear. Mauden privately tells the agents he suspects a spree-type serial killer who may be crucifying women. A pink butterfly hair tie is found stuck in Amanda's hair, and the team recalls seeing a matching one in the Augustine barn (Radford Horror 05).

Later that day he reports the toxicology screen: trace Xanax and a large quantity of opiates, enough to chemically sedate a person. The working theory is that Amanda was drugged and held, and could walk only because of a prior tolerance. Blood the team collected in the woods is given to him for a toxicology match, with a species test if there is no match (Radford Horror 05).

Radford Horror 06

Mauden tells the team that the blood from the tree matches Amanda's tox report. About five percent of the blood volume is foreign matter that none of his drug tests identify; he has sent it off for analysis, which will take a couple of weeks. Her blood also shows markers of severe malnutrition, although her body shows no physical signs of it. He recognizes the markers from a mission in sub-Saharan Africa. He has also examined Wilbur Whateley, whom he had advised to use a stationary bike, and says Wilbur was well cared for with only mild pressure injuries and that "there was nobody home" (Radford Horror 06).

Radford Horror 07

The team finds his family-medicine clinic using a stolen phone book. Kurt Larson asks him to compare the heroin recovered from Dean Lawson with the substance in Amanda's blood. Stunned by the quantity ("That's a lot of heroin"), he takes a test-tube sample to send to a friend, since he lacks the equipment locally (Radford Horror 07). See Dean Lawson's heroin and cash.

Relationships

  • Amanda Lucky: he delivered her and performed her autopsy.
  • Molly Underhill: works alongside her and passes on his findings through her.
  • The task force: cooperative; he calls them "Agents" and shares results.

Trivia

  • Rita spelled the name out at the table in Radford Horror 05 ("Maud... Mauden"), and it may be heard as "Maud."
  • In Radford Horror 05, Kurt's player Dante had the coroner standing by while the agents talked over the body, a running joke about conversing with the dead.
