Description

Hiram has a big mustache and large rings, drives a nice new Cadillac, and constantly crunches lemon candies from a tin without sucking on them. In person he is cold and evasive, and Dante notes his odd way of eating the candies ("Who the hell eats a lemon candy like that?"). When asked where he gets them, he answers, "Special order. They're from Spain" (Walkers 05, Walkers 06).

History

Before the arrival

In Walkers 02 a local complains about having to drive around the substation to reach the community center, blaming "the mayor and... the goddamn busybody," meaning Deborah Wells. See Ballard town government and the community center.

Walkers 05

He arrives at the ranch in his Cadillac, announces "I am Wilford Hiram. I am mayor," and shakes Andrew Howard's hand so vigorously that one of his rings cuts it. He offers condolences about the crushed rental car and fishes for why federal agents are in town. Andrew gives the cover story that they are an "oddball task force" sent on jobs that may or may not amount to something. Hiram leaves with an offer of whatever "the government of Ballard, Utah" can do. The players privately suspect him of embezzlement tied to the community center (Walkers 05).

Walkers 06

At Ballard City Hall, the party finds a desk, which Kurt Larson connects to the mayor, piled with New York Post issues that stop about three months earlier and buried under hundreds of Tootsie Roll wrappers. When the Cadillac arrives, Dante asks about records for the junkyard owner Yusuf Ansari. The mayor says the junkyard is in Ballard County but outside the municipality, offers to have a friend at the county records office look it up, nervously chews a candy, and writes the name on the back of an envelope. He says a fire years earlier destroyed most of the geological records. He then escorts the party out and locks the door behind them. Rita has Andrew theorize about Scandinavian "tooth trolls" that feed on sugar (Walkers 06). See sugar clues.

Walkers 07 and 08

In a private handout in Walkers 07, Rita learns that the skinwalkers cloned Andrew from a tissue sample taken by the ring that cut him on the mayor's hand (replication). In Walkers 08 the party suspects the mayor is one of the creatures, recalling his hard candies; Kurt says, "Yeah, I always knew I didn't like that fucking mayor." Rita later reasons that the skinwalkers probably began by taking over the mayor and others in charge (Walkers 08). See pilot and host biology.

Walkers 09

In the cavern the party sees the mayor carrying supplies near the tanks of blood and the portal. His fate is never shown (Walkers 09).

Trivia

  • Hiram's name is spoken only in Walkers 05; the other episodes call him "the mayor."
